Work abroad as a dental technician: UK, Ireland, EU, US

Dental technician is a registered title in the UK, but in Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands and most US states the lab role is not individually licensed. Clinical dental technicians, who treat patients directly, are regulated more closely.

Overview

Dental technicians design and make custom dental appliances such as dentures, crowns, bridges, implant restorations and orthodontic appliances, to the prescription of a dentist or clinical dental technician.

Clinical dental technicians (CDTs) go further: they examine patients and fit removable dentures themselves. If you trained abroad, the short answer is this. In the UK both titles are registered by the General Dental Council (GDC), with a paper assessment and no exam. In Ireland only clinical dental technicians are registered. In Germany and the Netherlands the lab role is not regulated for employees, and in the USA certification is voluntary in most states.

In the UK, overseas-qualified dental technicians and clinical dental technicians apply to the GDC as dental care professionals (DCPs). You complete the learning outcomes form for your title, send a validated syllabus, a transcript and at least two clinical references, and an independent panel of dentally qualified assessors advises the Registrar. Each title is a separate application: £625.97 for the first, £441.47 for an additional title. GOV.UK lists dental technicians under occupation code 3213, which since 22 July 2025 can only be sponsored for people who already held Skilled Worker permission, so check your right to work before you plan a move.

Ireland's Dental Council registers clinical dental technicians but keeps no register for dental technicians who work only in the lab. It is an offence under the Dentists Act 1985 to practise as a clinical dental technician while your registration is suspended. Holders of the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology from the Dublin Dental University Hospital are recognised automatically; others apply for assessment. The HSE has Dental Craftsman/Technician grades, and for unregulated roles it points applicants to a comparability statement from Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI).

Germany treats dental technology as a craft (Handwerk). The Recognition Finder says Zahntechniker is not regulated for employees, so you can work without recognition, but self-employment requires entry in the Register of Crafts and Trades, which usually needs equivalence with the German master craftsman qualification. In the Netherlands tandtechnicus is not a BIG profession, but tandprotheticus (denturist, the closest match to a clinical dental technician) is a protected training title under the BIG Act. In the USA the National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology (NBC) awards the voluntary Certified Dental Technician (CDT) credential.

This page is for dental technicians and clinical dental technicians trained outside these countries, including those working in Gulf labs. The most common problems are applying for the wrong title, references that do not describe the appliances you made, and assuming that a GDC registration also brings a UK visa.

Qualifications

Minimum

A dental technology qualification that allowed you to work in the country where you trained, with a certificate, transcript and syllabus your institution can certify. For the clinical dental technician title, a separate clinical qualification in providing removable dentures to patients.

Preferred

Training across the main appliance types (complete and partial dentures, crown and bridge, orthodontics and implants) and digital workflows, matching the GDC learning outcomes for your title. In the UK, NHS Health Careers lists foundation degree, BSc and apprenticeship routes; CDT training is a two-year part-time programme after qualifying as a dental technician.

Experience

The GDC asks for at least two clinical references, no more than two years old, describing your work in the title you apply for. NBC in the USA requires five years of training and/or experience in dental laboratory technology for the CDT exams, or two years of experience after a two-year CODA-accredited programme.

Country by country

United Kingdom: GDC

Dental technician and clinical dental technician (separate titles on the GDC register)

Requirements
Apply as an overseas-qualified DCP with the learning outcomes form for each title, a certified certificate and transcript, a syllabus validated by your school, a CV, at least two clinical references and a character reference. Each title needs its own application.
Exams
No exam. An independent panel of dentally qualified assessors meets monthly and advises the Registrar, who may register you, ask for more information or refuse.
English
Academic IELTS with at least 6.5 in each skill and 7 overall, or a recent English-taught qualification, a recent pass for another regulator in a majority English-speaking country, or recent practice in such a country.
Timeline
The GDC aims to assess complete applications within four months, longer at peak times, with a decision normally within four weeks of the panel meeting.
Good to know
Fees from 16 January 2026: £625.97 per application, £441.47 for an additional title, then a pro rata initial registration fee and a £108 annual retention fee. New visas are not available for code 3213 (medical and dental technicians).

Ireland: Dental Council

Clinical dental technician (registered); dental technician (not registered)

Requirements
The Dental Council registers clinical dental technicians only. With a qualification from outside Ireland and the UK, you apply for assessment if you were registered where the profession is regulated or practised for one year in the last ten where it is not. Lab-only dental technicians need no registration.
Exams
No published exam for clinical dental technicians. For lab technicians, the HSE suggests a QQI comparability statement where no regulator exists.
English
Proof of language proficiency is part of the CDT application. The Council's language page sets OET (Dentistry) grade B or Academic IELTS 7.0 in each module; confirm how it applies to CDTs.
Timeline
The Dental Council recommends allowing three months for registration.
Good to know
2026 fees for clinical dental technicians: €55 application and €60 annual retention (year runs 1 September to 31 August). Practising as a CDT while suspended is an offence under the Dentists Act 1985.

Germany: Handwerkskammer

Zahntechniker/in (craft trade; not regulated for employees)

Requirements
Employees can work without recognition. For an equivalence assessment, apply to the chamber of crafts (Handwerkskammer) for your area. To set up your own lab you need entry in the Register of Crafts and Trades, which usually requires equivalence with the master craftsman (Meister) qualification.
Exams
No recognition exam for employees. A partial recognition can be completed with further training; for the master qualification, compensation measures may apply.
Language
German, not English. You do not need to prove German for the procedure, but it matters for work.
Timeline
The chamber confirms receipt within one month and decides within three months of a complete file.
Good to know
The Recognition Finder lists about €100 to €600 for the procedure in Berlin, plus translations and certified copies.

Netherlands: BIG

Tandprotheticus (protected training title); tandtechnicus (not regulated)

Requirements
Dental technician ('denturist'), or tandprotheticus, is listed in the BIG Act with a protected title but no BIG registration. With a diploma from outside Europe you apply for a Certificate of Professional Competence assessed by the CBGV. Lab-only tandtechnici are not on the list, so employers decide.
Exams
No BI-test; the BIG register lists BI-tests only for doctors, dentists and nurses. The CBGV may advise additional training.
Language
Dutch at the level the BIG register sets for your profession (B2 for higher vocational professions), plus English reading skills. Certificates must be under two years old.
Timeline
The BIG register says six to 18 months on average, with a decision within six weeks of your file reaching the committee for professions without a BI-test.
Good to know
The certificate application and committee assessment are currently free. Voluntary registration for denturists is with the Organisatie van Nederlandse Tandprothetici.

United States: NBC

Certified Dental Technician (CDT), voluntary national certification

Requirements
NBC requires a working knowledge of English, high school graduation, good ethical standing and five years of training and/or experience in dental laboratory technology. The BLS says most technicians learn on the job and certification is optional.
Exams
Three exams within four years: a written comprehensive exam (160 multiple-choice questions), a written specialty exam (80 questions) and a practical exam in one of seven specialties.
English
NBC requires a working knowledge of English; no test score is set.
Timeline
Depends on documenting the five years of training and experience. NBC offers computer-based written exams and remote practical testing.
Good to know
Fees in the NBC handbook revised 1 March 2026: $275, $275 and $650. NBC says about a dozen states have more specific rules for commercial dental laboratories; check the state.

The route, step by step

  1. 1. Work out which title matches your training

Decide whether you are a lab-only dental technician or also trained to treat patients as a clinical dental technician or denturist. The UK registers both titles separately, Ireland registers only CDTs, and the Netherlands protects only tandprotheticus. Applying for the wrong title wastes a fee.
  2. 2. Ask your institution for course evidence

The GDC wants a certified certificate and transcript and a syllabus validated by your head of department. German chambers and the Dutch committee also want detailed course documents, translated. Start early, as schools can be slow.
  3. 3. Collect detailed references

The GDC wants at least two references on letterhead, under two years old, listing your dates, the appliances you made and your level of skill. A reference that only says you were employed is not enough. Include CAD/CAM or implant work if you have done it.
  4. 4. Pass the language test

The GDC asks for Academic IELTS 7 overall with 6.5 in each skill unless another evidence type applies. Ireland asks CDTs for proof of language proficiency. In Germany and the Netherlands you need German or Dutch to work, even where the lab role is unregulated.
  5. 5. Gather good standing letters

Ireland wants letters of good standing from each authority you have been registered with. If you held a Gulf licence, ask each regulator for a certificate of good standing; this can take weeks.
  6. 6. Apply and respond quickly

Submit to the GDC (£625.97), the Dental Council (€55 for CDTs), the German Handwerkskammer, the BIG register for tandprotheticus, or NBC. If the GDC refuses you, you can send new evidence within 28 days or appeal within 30 days.
  7. 7. Check work rights before you move

In the UK, dental technicians fall under code 3213, which new Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker applicants cannot be sponsored in. In Germany, self-employment needs the Register of Crafts and Trades. Check each country's official immigration site before resigning.

Exam preparation

Only the USA has a structured exam for dental technicians, NBC's three-part CDT certification, and it is voluntary in most states. The UK has no exam: the GDC panel decides from your written evidence. Germany and the Netherlands assess your documents and may set further training. Preparation therefore means a strong evidence file, and for the CDT, written and practical revision.

Tips

  • Plan the CDT as three exams taken within four years: written comprehensive (160 questions), written specialty (80 questions) and a practical in your specialty.
  • Choose the CDT specialty you work in most: complete dentures, partial dentures, crown and bridge, ceramics, orthodontics, implants or digital workflow.
  • Document your five years of training and experience carefully before you apply to NBC; on-the-job training and apprenticeships count.
  • For the GDC, map each learning outcome for your title to evidence, and ask referees to describe the appliances you made, not just your role.
  • If you apply as a clinical dental technician, show evidence of patient-facing work: examination, impressions, fitting and aftercare of dentures.
  • Learn the UK limits: dental technicians do not provide appliances to the public without a prescription, and CDTs need a dentist's referral for dentate patients.
  • For Germany, prepare German terminology for materials and techniques before a chamber or employer interview.
  • Keep photos or digital design files of your work where patient confidentiality allows; they help in interviews and practical exams.

Pay by country

Most dental technicians work in commercial laboratories, where the employer sets pay. Public scales exist in the UK and Ireland and are shown with their effective dates. For Germany and the Netherlands we could not confirm a national figure from an official source.

  • UK£32,073 to £39,043 (Band 5), £39,959 to £48,117 (Band 6), 2026/27NHS Agenda for Change in England from 1 April 2026. NHS Health Careers says dental technicians typically start at Band 5, with specialists at Band 6 and advanced technicians at Band 7. Commercial lab pay varies.

Career growth

Dental technicians can specialise, add clinical skills, or move into lab management. In the UK, training as a clinical dental technician is the main step towards direct patient care.

  1. Clinical dental technician

NHS Health Careers describes CDT training as a two-year part-time programme. The GDC says CDTs can provide removable appliances directly to patients with no natural teeth or implants, and to others on referral from a dentist.
  2. Extended clinical skills

With further training, UK dental technicians can take impressions, intra-oral scans and occlusal records with patients as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  3. Specialist and advanced roles

NHS Health Careers lists prosthodontic, conservation and orthodontic specialisms, with specialist posts at Band 6 and advanced posts at Band 7. Hospital labs also make maxillofacial appliances.
  4. Master craftsman and lab ownership

In Germany, running your own lab requires entry in the Register of Crafts and Trades, usually with the Meister qualification or its recognised equivalent.
  5. Certification and teaching

In the USA, the CDT credential shows mastery across a specialty. Experienced technicians also teach in colleges and train apprentices.

Common mistakes

  1. 1

Assuming a UK job offer brings a visa. Dental technicians (code 3213) cannot be newly sponsored for a Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visa unless the worker held that permission before 22 July 2025.

  2. 2

Applying for clinical dental technician without patient-facing training. The GDC title requires clinical competence, not just lab skill.

  3. 3

Using one GDC application for two titles. Each title needs its own form and fee (£441.47 for an additional title).

  4. 4

Sending references that only confirm employment. The GDC wants the appliances you made, your dates and your skill level.

  5. 5

Expecting to register as a lab technician in Ireland. The Dental Council registers only clinical dental technicians.

  6. 6

Opening your own lab in Germany without the Register of Crafts and Trades entry, which usually needs master craftsman equivalence.

  7. 7

Assuming a tandtechnicus diploma gives you the Dutch tandprotheticus title. Only tandprotheticus is protected, and it needs a Certificate of Professional Competence.

  8. 8

Applying to NBC before you can document five years of training and experience, or the two-year exception for CODA-accredited graduates.

Questions

Yes. Dental technician and clinical dental technician are both GDC titles. Overseas-qualified technicians apply as dental care professionals and are assessed on paper by an independent panel, with no exam.

The overseas-qualified DCP application is £625.97 from 16 January 2026, or £441.47 for an additional title. If registered, you then pay a pro rata initial registration fee and a £108 annual retention fee.

Not as a new applicant at present. GOV.UK places dental technicians in occupation code 3213, which can only be sponsored for workers who held Skilled Worker permission before 22 July 2025.

A dental technician with extra clinical training who can examine patients and fit removable dentures. In the UK the GDC says CDTs can treat patients with no teeth or implants directly, and others on referral from a dentist.

Only clinical dental technicians are registered, by the Dental Council. Lab-only dental technicians do not need registration. The HSE employs dental technicians on its Dental Craftsman/Technician scale.

If your qualification is not from the Dublin Dental University Hospital, apply to the Dental Council for assessment with your qualification, ID, language evidence and good standing letters. The 2026 fees are €55 to apply and €60 a year to stay registered.

Yes. Zahntechniker is not regulated for employees, so you can work without recognition. The Handwerkskammer can assess equivalence within three months, and self-employment needs the Register of Crafts and Trades.

No. Only tandprotheticus (denturist) has a protected title under the BIG Act, and it has no BIG registration. With a non-European diploma you need a Certificate of Professional Competence to use that title.

Not in most states. The BLS says most technicians learn on the job and certification is optional. NBC's CDT credential is voluntary, and some states have specific rules for dental laboratories.

NBC requires three exams within four years: a written comprehensive exam of 160 questions, a written specialty exam of 80 questions and a practical exam. The 2026 fees are $275, $275 and $650.

Yes, as evidence. GDC references can describe the appliances you made in the Gulf, and NBC counts training and experience towards its five-year requirement. Your Gulf licence itself does not transfer.
