Work abroad as an ODP: UK, Ireland, EU and US routes (2026)
Operating department practitioner is a UK title regulated by the HCPC. Other countries treat theatre work differently: Germany regulates operating and anaesthesia technical assistants, while Ireland, the Netherlands and the USA have no equivalent national register.
Overview
Operating department practitioners (ODPs) care for patients through anaesthesia, surgery and recovery. The UK is the clearest destination for internationally trained theatre professionals: "operating department practitioner" is a protected title regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and the HCPC international route is open to anyone whose training is relevant to operating department practice.
There is no exam; two ODP assessors judge your training and experience on paper.
The other countries MedicSail covers do not have an ODP profession in the UK sense. Germany regulates two related professions by federal law, Operationstechnische Assistentin or Assistent (OTA, operating theatre technical assistant) and Anästhesietechnische Assistentin or Assistent (ATA, anaesthesia technical assistant), each with three years of full-time training and a state recognition procedure for foreign qualifications. Ireland's CORU does not list ODPs among the professions it regulates, and operating assistant is not one of the 11 professions on the Dutch BIG register. In the USA, the nearest role is the surgical technologist, certified by private bodies rather than licensed nationally.
This means your choice of country shapes the route. In the UK you apply once to the HCPC. In Germany you apply to a state authority for permission to use the OTA or ATA title, need German, and may be set an adaptation course or knowledge test. In Ireland, the Netherlands and the USA there is no national registration route for internationally trained ODPs; employers decide whom to hire, and in the USA the main certification requires a US-accredited programme.
Demand for theatre staff is high in the UK, where NHS Health Careers says ODPs typically start on Band 5, and in the USA, where the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of surgical assistants and technologists to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035. ODPs in the UK are eligible for the Health and Care Worker visa.
The biggest issue for most applicants is scope. A UK ODP is trained in anaesthetic, surgical and post-anaesthesia care. Many overseas programmes cover one phase only, such as surgical or anaesthesia technology, and nurses who work in theatres are registered as nurses, not ODPs. This page explains how each country treats your training, including if you hold a Gulf licence.
Qualifications
Minimum
A qualification in operating department practice or a closely related perioperative discipline (for example operating room, surgical or anaesthesia technology) that allowed you to practise in the country where you trained, with course-by-course theory and practical hours your institution can document.
Preferred
Training covering all three phases of perioperative care: anaesthetic, surgical (scrub) and post-anaesthesia care, matching the HCPC standards of proficiency for ODPs. For Germany, a three-year programme comparable to OTA or ATA training.
Experience
No fixed minimum. The HCPC uses your experience to decide whether it makes up for gaps in your training, and Germany's recognition law allows professional experience to offset substantial differences. Experience across anaesthetics, scrub and recovery strengthens a UK application.
Country by country
United Kingdom: HCPC
Operating department practitioner (protected title)
- Requirements
- Apply through the HCPC international route with a course information form completed by your institution, an experience section, certified documents and references on official work email addresses. Your training must be relevant to operating department practice.
- Exams
- No exam. Two ODP assessors decide on paper and may offer a test of competence, a structured professional discussion usually held online, to be completed within 12 months.
- English
- IELTS 7.0 with no element below 6.5, or TOEFL iBT at the HCPC scores. OET is not listed for ODPs. Qualifications from listed English-speaking countries are exempt.
- Timeline
- The HCPC says about 3 months to a first decision from a complete application, and about 3 months for verification after acceptance.
- Good to know
- Fees: £678.38 non-refundable scrutiny fee, then £370.02 registration (or £246.68 if you join in the first year of the ODP cycle).
Ireland: No statutory register
No regulated ODP title
- Requirements
- CORU's registration boards do not include operating department practitioners, and we found no other Irish register for the role. There is no recognition route for internationally trained ODPs.
- Exams
- None.
- English
- Set by the employer.
- Timeline
- Not applicable.
- Good to know
- Theatre roles that need statutory registration in Ireland are generally nursing posts registered with NMBI. If you are a nurse, see the nursing route; otherwise ask the employer how they recruit theatre staff.
Germany: State recognition authority
Operationstechnische Assistentin or Assistent (OTA); Anästhesietechnische Assistentin or Assistent (ATA)
- Requirements
- Under the ATA-OTA-Gesetz you need permission (Erlaubnis) from the competent state authority to use the title. It checks that your foreign qualification is equivalent, your reliability, health and the German needed for practice.
- Exams
- If your training from outside the EU is not equivalent, you choose between a knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) and an adaptation course ending in an examination.
- Language
- German, not English, at the level needed for practice. Ask the state authority which certificate it accepts.
- Timeline
- Set by the state authority; a compensation measure adds months.
- Good to know
- German training lasts three years full time. We could not confirm recognition fees from an official page; ask the authority, and budget for certified translations.
Netherlands: Not on the BIG register
Operatieassistent and anesthesiemedewerker (not BIG professions)
- Requirements
- Neither role is among the 11 professions on the BIG register, so there is no BIG registration or Certificate of Professional Competence for them. Dutch training runs through CZO-recognised programmes.
- Exams
- No national exam for foreign graduates that we could confirm.
- Language
- Dutch is needed in practice; requirements are set by the employer.
- Timeline
- Not applicable.
- Good to know
- We found no official recognition procedure for foreign-trained operating assistants. Use the BIG register's advice wizard and ask CZO or the employer before you plan a move.
United States: NBSTSA and state rules
Surgical technologist (certification, not a national licence)
- Requirements
- The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) says that to sit the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) exam you must graduate from a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited surgical technology programme. Some states regulate surgical technologists.
- Exams
- CST: 175 multiple-choice questions (150 scored) in four hours, computer-based.
- English
- No national English test; set by the programme and employer.
- Timeline
- For most internationally trained practitioners, completing a US-accredited programme first.
- Good to know
- There is no US route that recognises an overseas ODP or anaesthesia technology qualification directly, and no US equivalent of the ODP's anaesthetic role for technologists.
The route, step by step
1. Work out which profession your training matches
Compare your programme with the HCPC ODP standards of proficiency and, for Germany, with OTA or ATA training. Note which phases of care you were trained in: anaesthetic, surgical or recovery. If your qualification is in nursing, a nursing route is usually the right one in every country.2. Choose a country with a real route
The UK and Germany have registration routes for foreign-trained theatre practitioners. Ireland and the Netherlands have no register for the role, and the USA certifies surgical technologists only after a US-accredited programme. Check this before you spend money on tests and translations.3. Request detailed course documents
The HCPC needs its course information form completed, stamped and signed by your institution with hours for each course. German authorities need certified copies and sworn translations of your diploma and curriculum. Start early, as institutions can be slow.4. Pass the language test
For the UK, IELTS 7.0 with no element below 6.5 or TOEFL iBT at the HCPC scores; OET is not accepted for ODPs. For Germany, German at the level the state authority requires. Results usually need to be recent, within two years for the HCPC.5. Gather references and good standing evidence
The HCPC wants referees who supervised you, on official work email addresses, and contacts regulators during verification. Ask each regulator you have been licensed with, including in the Gulf, how to obtain a good standing or verification letter.6. Apply and respond to the decision
Apply to the HCPC (£678.38 scrutiny fee) or the German state authority. If gaps are found, you may be offered an HCPC test of competence or a German knowledge test or adaptation course. Prepare for the specific gaps the decision letter lists.7. Register, then secure a job and visa
Pay the registration fee and wait for your registration or permission before using the title. In the UK, ODPs are eligible for the Health and Care Worker visa with a licensed sponsor. Check the official immigration rules for each country before resigning.
Exam preparation
There is no written licensing exam for ODPs in the UK. Any assessment is targeted: an HCPC test of competence is a structured professional discussion about the gaps in your application, and Germany's knowledge test for OTA or ATA covers the areas where your training differs from German training. In the USA, the CST exam tests surgical technology after a US-accredited programme. Your decision letter is the best guide to what you need to revise.
Tips
- Map your experience to each HCPC ODP standard of proficiency before you apply, so the assessors can see anaesthetic, surgical and recovery competence.
- For a test of competence, prepare to talk through real cases: how you prepared the anaesthetic room, managed an airway, checked instruments and handed over in recovery.
- Learn how UK theatres use surgical safety checklists and team briefings, which the HCPC standards name.
- Revise the phase you have practised least, for example post-anaesthesia care if you have worked mainly as a scrub practitioner.
- Review medicines used in anaesthesia and recovery, IV fluids and blood product checks, which appear in the ODP standards.
- Know UK consent, safeguarding, duty of candour and record-keeping expectations from the HCPC standards of conduct, performance and ethics.
- For a German knowledge test, prepare in German, including theatre terminology and German law on hygiene and patient rights.
- Book any assessment within its deadline: the HCPC test of competence must be completed within 12 months.

Pay by country
Only the UK has a national scale that names ODPs. Elsewhere pay is set by collective agreements or employers, and we have not invented figures where no official source confirms them.

Career growth
Once registered in the UK, ODPs can specialise within the three phases of perioperative care or move into advanced, leadership and education roles.
Anaesthetic, scrub or recovery specialist
Build depth in one phase or specialty, such as cardiac, neuro or obstetric theatres. In the NHS, experienced ODPs move from Band 5 to Band 6 posts.Surgical first assistant
The HCPC standards expect ODPs to understand the surgical first assistant role. With further training, some ODPs take on this extended role in theatre.Theatre leadership
Team leader, theatre coordinator and theatre manager posts, usually at Band 7 and above depending on the employer's job evaluation.Advanced and allied roles
Some ODPs move into critical care, resuscitation or anaesthesia associate roles after further training. Each has its own entry and, where relevant, registration requirements.Education
Practice educators and university lecturers train student ODPs. Academic posts usually need a master's degree.
Common mistakes
- 1
Applying to the HCPC with a nursing qualification. Nurses usually register with the NMC, even if they work in theatres.
- 2
Applying with training in one phase only. The HCPC expects anaesthetic, surgical and post-anaesthesia competence; show the missing phases through experience.
- 3
Sitting OET. The HCPC does not list OET for ODPs, so the result will not count.
- 4
Leaving the course information form to the end. It must be completed, stamped and signed by your institution with hours for each course.
- 5
Using referees on personal email addresses. The HCPC needs official work email addresses.
- 6
Using AI or copied text in the experience section. The HCPC says you must not, and it checks.
- 7
Planning a move to Ireland or the Netherlands as an ODP. Neither has a register or recognition route for the role.
- 8
Assuming an overseas qualification leads to US certification. The CST exam requires a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited programme.

Questions
Of the countries MedicSail covers, only the UK has a regulated ODP title, through the HCPC. Germany regulates the related OTA and ATA professions. Ireland and the Netherlands have no register for the role, and the USA certifies surgical technologists privately.
Possibly. The HCPC international route is open to people whose training is relevant to operating department practice. Two ODP assessors check whether your training and experience meet the standards across anaesthetic, surgical and recovery care.
No. The HCPC assesses on paper. If it needs more information it may offer a test of competence, a structured professional discussion usually held online.
IELTS 7.0 with no element below 6.5, or TOEFL iBT taken from 21 January 2026 with Reading 4.5, Listening 5, Writing 4.5, Speaking 5 and Overall 5. OET is not listed for ODPs.
A £678.38 non-refundable scrutiny fee, then £370.02 registration covering three professional years, or £246.68 if you join in the first year of the ODP registration cycle.
Yes. GOV.UK lists operating department practitioners under occupation code 2259, which is eligible for new Health and Care Worker visa applications.
There is no ODP register in Ireland, and CORU does not regulate the role. Theatre posts needing registration are generally nursing posts, so check with the employer.
Germany has two regulated professions, Operationstechnische Assistenz (OTA) and Anästhesietechnische Assistenz (ATA), each with three years of full-time training. You need state permission to use the title, German language skills, and possibly a knowledge test or adaptation course.
No. The BIG register lists 11 professions, and operatieassistent and anesthesiemedewerker are not among them. We found no official recognition procedure for foreign-trained operating assistants.
Not directly. NBSTSA says CST candidates must graduate from a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited surgical technology programme. The BLS median wage for surgical technologists was $64,650 in May 2025.
No. In the UK you apply through the HCPC international route, and your Gulf experience can help fill gaps in your training. You need IELTS or TOEFL iBT, as Gulf countries are not on the HCPC English-speaking list.
