Nicosia General Hospital Careers, Salaries & Jobs
Nicosia General is the State Health Services Organisation's flagship hospital and, by its own account, the largest in Cyprus, with 217 doctors and 1,009 nursing officers. SHSO hires only Cypriot and EU citizens unless the Council of Ministers allows an exception, and asks for very good Greek.

About Nicosia General
Nicosia General Hospital is the main hospital of the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO, Greek OKYpY), which runs Cyprus's public hospitals.
SHSO describes itself as the largest healthcare provider in Cyprus, with 9 hospitals, 36 health centres and more than 7,000 employees. Nicosia General and the Archbishop Makarios III Hospital together form the hospitals of the Nicosia region.
The hospital's welcome page calls it the largest hospital in Cyprus in number of patients, buildings and equipment. Its hospital page lists 456 active inpatient beds, 12 operating theatres, 217 doctors in more than 30 specialties, 16 university doctors and 1,009 nursing officers, alongside other health professionals. Each year it treats about 25,000 inpatients and handles 250,000 outpatient visits, 7,500 operations and around 100,000 visits to its accident and emergency department.
Its clinics and departments cover almost every adult specialty, including cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, a transplant centre, a trauma centre, a breast centre, oncology and radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, a paraplegic and spinal cord rehabilitation centre and a cochlear implant centre.
For internationally trained professionals of every kind, SHSO's own vacancy notices set the limits. They state that no one is appointed unless they are a citizen of Cyprus or another EU member state, although the Council of Ministers may in special cases allow a non-EU citizen to apply in the public interest. They also ask for very good Greek and registration with the Cyprus council for your profession, the Cyprus Medical Council in the case of doctors, before you start.

International recruitment
- Nicosia General Hospital does not recruit separately; vacancies are published by SHSO on its Careers page, which lists each notice with the hospitals it covers. SHSO says it has more than 7,000 employees. We found no international recruitment programme on SHSO's pages.
- SHSO's October 2026 notice for seven doctors' posts (Ιατρικοί Λειτουργοί) states that no one is appointed unless they are a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus or of another EU member state. The Council of Ministers may, in a special case and in the public interest, allow a non-EU citizen to apply under the SHSO General Regulations of 2017; such a person can be appointed on a fixed-term contract, or permanently only in limited cases set out in the regulations.
- The same notice asks for registration in the Cyprus Medical Register or in another EU member state's register to apply, with registration in Cyprus and a licence from the Cyprus Medical Association required before the appointment takes effect. They ask for very good Greek and good English, French or German, proved through the Public Service Commission's list of accepted evidence or through exams by the closing date.
- The notice also mentions a tax exemption of up to 50% under the Income Tax Law for people who lived outside Cyprus before starting work there. The posts are first appointments, with pay reduced by 10% for the first two years.
- In practice, Nicosia General is a realistic employer for EU citizens and for doctors who already have Cypriot or EU citizenship. Non-EU doctors would depend on a Council of Ministers exception, and non-EU nurses on SHSO's rules for nursing posts, which we did not see in a current notice.
What you need before you can be hired
Citizenship: Cypriot or EU, unless the Council of Ministers allows an exception for a non-EU citizen in a special case.
Doctors: registration with the Cyprus Medical Council (registration in another EU state is enough to apply) and the annual licence to practise from the Cyprus Medical Association before you start. Non-EU degrees need KYSATS equivalence, EPIC verification and C1 Greek for the Medical Council.
Specialist posts: a specialty certificate under the Registration of Doctors Law in the advertised specialty.
Language: very good Greek and good English, French or German, proved by the closing date.
Nurses: registration and a licence from the Cyprus Nursing and Midwifery Council, which tests elementary Greek at an interview; non-EU citizens also need a Department of Labour work permit and a residence permit.
