About NewYork-Presbyterian
NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP) combines the expertise of Columbia and Weill Cornell Medicine. It says it was founded more than 250 years ago and now runs 10 campuses and more than 450 primary and specialty care clinics and practices.
It reports 45,000 employees, 10,000 physicians, 14,000 nurses, 2,500 residents and fellows and more than 4,000 beds.
The two main Manhattan campuses are NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center in Washington Heights and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center on the Upper East Side. U.S. News & World Report named "NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell" to its 2026-2027 Best Hospitals Honor Roll, a list of 20 hospitals in alphabetical order.
For international doctors, NYP is a large training employer but visa policy is set by each program. The Weill Cornell internal medicine residency, for example, states that NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center does not sponsor H-1B visas and accepts J-1 visas only.
For nurses, pharmacists, therapists and other licensed staff, NYP does not publish an international recruitment program on the pages we reviewed. In New York these professions are licensed by the State Education Department, Office of the Professions, so a New York license comes before any visa route.

International recruitment
- Doctors: visa rules are set program by program. The Weill Department of Medicine internal medicine residency states: "NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center does not sponsor H-1B visas. We accept J-1 visas only." It invites only international graduates with at least two months of authentic clinical experience in a US hospital, and says observerships do not count.
- Other NYP programs, including those on the Columbia campus, list their visa options on their own pages and on the AMA's FREIDA database. Many list J-1 sponsorship through ECFMG; check each one before you apply.
- Nurses: we found no international nurse recruitment program on NYP's own pages. Nurses trained abroad usually reach New York employers after getting a New York RN license, applying directly or through an agency that arranges an EB-3 green card petition with a named employer.
- Observerships: we found no general observership program for international graduates on NYP's pages. Note that the Weill Cornell internal medicine program does not count observerships as US clinical experience.
What you need before you can be hired
Registered nurses: a New York RN license from the New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions. Graduates of foreign nursing schools apply under the pathway for foreign-educated nurses, have their education verified (CGFNS offers a Credential Verification Service for New York) and pass the NCLEX-RN. New York also requires approved short courses, including child abuse identification and reporting.
Visa for nurses: VisaScreen is required for most foreign registered nurses before a visa is issued. For most internationally educated nurses the long-term route is an employer-sponsored green card in the EB-3 category. USCIS says professional nurses are a Schedule A occupation, so the employer does not need a DOL-approved labor certification first; your wait then depends on the State Department Visa Bulletin for your country of birth.
Doctors: ECFMG certification (which includes passing USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK), a residency place through ERAS and the National Resident Matching Program, and a visa the program supports; at Weill Cornell internal medicine, J-1 only.
H-1B: USCIS says certain new H-1B petitions filed at or after 12:01 a.m. Eastern on September 21, 2025 must be accompanied by an additional $100,000 payment unless an exception applies, so check with the employer before relying on an H-1B.
How to apply
1. Choose job or training program
Nursing and other staff jobs are on careers.nyp.org; residency positions are filled through ERAS and the Match.2. Nurses: start New York licensure
Apply to the New York State Education Department, arrange verification of your foreign education (directly or through the CGFNS service for New York), complete the required short courses and pass the NCLEX-RN.3. Search careers.nyp.org
Check each posting for license and work authorization requirements; New York roles require a New York license.4. Doctors: read the program's visa rules
Check the program page and FREIDA listing. If a program takes J-1 only, plan on ECFMG sponsorship.5. Build US clinical experience
Some NYP programs, such as Weill Cornell internal medicine, expect hands-on US clinical experience and do not count observerships.6. Complete immigration steps
Residents complete ECFMG J-1 sponsorship; nurses complete VisaScreen and an EB-3 petition with their sponsoring employer.
