About Mass General

Massachusetts General Hospital, usually called Mass General or MGH, is a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School in Boston and a founding member of the Mass General Brigham health system.

Mass General Brigham reports that MGH has 1,045 inpatient beds, 3,660 physicians and 3.87 million outpatient visits, and calls it home to the largest hospital-based research enterprise in the US.

Mass General was named to the U.S. News & World Report 2026-2027 Best Hospitals Honor Roll, which lists 20 hospitals in alphabetical order. Its own page says it is ranked #1 for psychiatry and top 10 in six other specialties in 2026-27.

For staff trained abroad, visa work for MGH runs through the Mass General Brigham Office for Global Professionals and Scholars (GPS), which processes sponsorship requests for nonimmigrant staff, scholar and student visas including J-1, H-1B, TN, E-3 and O-1, and advises on green cards.

Mass General does not publish an international recruitment program for nurses, pharmacists, therapists or other clinical staff on the pages we reviewed, and each needs a Massachusetts license from the relevant board. Its residency programs are run by Mass General Brigham, and visa options are set program by program. The GPS office also handles scholar visas, which matters for research staff at the hospital.

International recruitment

  • Visa services: Mass General Brigham's Office for Global Professionals and Scholars says it processes "visa sponsorship requests for all nonimmigrant staff, scholar, and student visas (including J-1, J-2, H-1B, TN, E-3, and O-1 visas)", advises hiring departments and foreign nationals, and advises on green cards and attorney referrals. Whether a particular job is sponsored is decided by the hiring department.
  • Doctors: Mass General's residency and fellowship programs are Mass General Brigham programs. We found no single published institution-wide visa policy; program listings on the AMA's FREIDA database show visa options program by program, and most list J-1 sponsorship through ECFMG. Check each program's own page and FREIDA listing.
  • Nurses: we found no international nurse recruitment program on Mass General or Mass General Brigham pages. Nurses trained abroad usually need a Massachusetts RN license first and an employer willing to sponsor an EB-3 green card.
  • Observerships: Mass General has advertised an international observership program for practicing clinicians, but at our October 2026 check the program page redirected to the general hospital page, so we could not confirm it is open. Some departments run their own observerships.

What you need before you can be hired

  • Registered nurses: a Massachusetts RN license from the Board of Registration in Nursing. The board requires nurses educated outside the US to have a credential evaluation from a board-approved agency, such as TruMerit (formerly CGFNS), sent to its application vendor, an approved English test if their education was not in English, and the NCLEX-RN.

  • Visa for nurses: VisaScreen is required for most foreign registered nurses before a visa is issued. For most internationally educated nurses the long-term route is an employer-sponsored green card in the EB-3 category. USCIS says professional nurses are a Schedule A occupation, so the employer does not need a DOL-approved labor certification first; your wait then depends on the State Department Visa Bulletin for your country of birth.

  • Doctors: ECFMG certification (which includes passing USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK), a residency or fellowship place, any training license the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine requires, and a visa the program supports.

  • H-1B: USCIS says certain new H-1B petitions filed at or after 12:01 a.m. Eastern on September 21, 2025 must be accompanied by an additional $100,000 payment unless an exception applies, so check with the employer before relying on an H-1B.

How to apply

  1. 1. Separate the job from the visa

Find a role first. Mass General Brigham's GPS office processes visas only once a hiring department decides to sponsor.
  2. 2. Nurses: start Massachusetts licensure

Get a credential evaluation from a board-approved agency, meet the English requirement and apply to the Board of Registration in Nursing to sit the NCLEX-RN.
  3. 3. Search Mass General Brigham careers

MGH jobs are posted on the Mass General Brigham careers site. Check each posting for Massachusetts license and work authorization requirements.
  4. 4. Doctors: check each program's visa options

Read the program page and its FREIDA listing before applying through ERAS, so you know whether it takes J-1 only or also H-1B.
  5. 5. Work with GPS once offered

After an offer, the hiring department starts the visa request with the Office for Global Professionals and Scholars.
  6. 6. Nurses: VisaScreen and EB-3

Complete VisaScreen and follow the EB-3 process with whichever employer sponsors your green card.

Pay

There is no national pay scale in the US, and we found no general salary scale published by Mass General on the pages we reviewed. These are Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) estimates for the Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH metropolitan area, May 2025. They cover all employers in the area, not Mass General alone. Values are annual medians; the notes give the annual mean. Physicians are not shown because training doctors are paid a stipend set by their program.

Questions

Mass General Brigham's Office for Global Professionals and Scholars processes J-1, H-1B, TN, E-3, O-1 and other visa requests for its hospitals. Whether a given job is sponsored is up to the hiring department.

We found no international recruitment program for nurses or other clinical staff on its own pages. Nurses need a Massachusetts RN license and an employer willing to sponsor an EB-3 green card; pharmacists, therapists and other licensed staff need a license from their own Massachusetts board.

It depends on the program. Mass General Brigham programs list their visa options individually; check the program page and its AMA FREIDA listing.

A credential evaluation from a board-approved agency such as TruMerit, an approved English test if your education was not in English, and the NCLEX-RN.

Some departments run observerships. The hospital-wide international observership page redirected when we checked in October 2026, so confirm with the department you want to visit.

BLS put the median registered nurse wage in the Boston-Cambridge-Newton metro area at $106,180 a year in May 2025, across all employers.

It is on the U.S. News & World Report 2026-2027 Best Hospitals Honor Roll, which lists 20 hospitals alphabetically, and says it is #1 for psychiatry in 2026-27.
