Mayo Clinic Jobs, Salaries & Visa Sponsorship
Mayo Clinic's Rochester campus is one of the largest hospital employers in the Midwest. Its published international routes are for nurses, with dedicated visa support that may include green card sponsorship, and for doctors in its residency programs, which sponsor J-1 and some H-1B visas; pharmacists, therapists and scientists apply to individual roles.

About Mayo Clinic
Mayo Clinic describes itself as the largest integrated, not-for-profit medical group practice in the world. Its original and largest campus is in Rochester, Minnesota, where the hospital runs on two campuses, Saint Marys and Methodist.
Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science lists 1,265 beds at Saint Marys and 794 at Methodist, and more than 37,000 staff on the Rochester campus.
Mayo Clinic in Rochester was named to the U.S. News & World Report 2026-2027 Best Hospitals Honor Roll, which lists 20 hospitals in alphabetical order rather than ranking them against each other. Mayo Clinic-Arizona and Mayo Clinic-Florida are listed separately.
For internationally trained staff, Mayo is unusual among large US employers in saying openly on its nursing careers site that it welcomes nurses relocating to the United States and that, depending on visa type, it has dedicated support that may include green card sponsorship. It also encourages nurses eligible for TN status to apply. That page is for nurses; we found no equivalent page for pharmacists, therapists or other allied health professionals, who need a Minnesota license from their own board.
For doctors, Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education trains residents and fellows and publishes clear visa rules: J-1 sponsorship through ECFMG, H-1B in limited cases, and, since September 2025, no new H-1B petitions that would require the $100,000 payment.

International recruitment
- Nurses: Mayo's careers site has a page for international nurses. It says: "We encourage anyone authorized to work in the United States to apply. In addition, we encourage individuals eligible for TN sponsorship to explore a career with us today! Depending on your visa type, we have dedicated support available, which may include green card sponsorship." It does not publish a fixed list of requirements on that page, so read each job posting.
- Several Mayo nursing job postings state that sponsorship needs state licensure and completion of VisaScreen or an equivalent certification. TN status is only open to citizens of Canada and Mexico; nurses from other countries would normally need an immigrant visa such as EB-3.
- Doctors: Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education says ECFMG sponsors J-1 exchange visitor physicians, and that Mayo may also sponsor residents and fellows in H-1B status if all requirements are met. For J-1 sponsorship applicants must have passed USMLE Steps 1 and 2; for H-1B, Steps 1, 2 and 3.
- Mayo states that after the September 21, 2025 Presidential Proclamation, "Mayo Clinic will not pursue a new H-1B visa for an applicant whose status would require the payment of the $100,000." In rare cases advanced fellows may be sponsored for O-1 status.
- Mayo's visiting medical student clerkships accept international students in their final year who have passed USMLE Step 1, through the AAMC VSLO portal only, with a $350 non-refundable fee for international applicants and TOEFL (minimum 104) where teaching was not in English. We did not find a general public observership program for graduated international doctors.
What you need before you can be hired
Registered nurses: a Minnesota RN license from the Minnesota Board of Nursing. Applicants educated abroad (other than Canada) need a TruMerit (CGFNS) Credentials Evaluation Service Professional Report, an approved English test unless exempt, the NCLEX-RN and the board's fingerprint background check.
English for Minnesota nursing licensure: the board lists IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 7.0 speaking, OET 350 speaking with 300 in other modules, or TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall with 5.0 speaking, unless you were educated in an exempt English-speaking country.
Visa for nurses: VisaScreen (TruMerit) is required for most foreign registered nurses before a US visa is issued. For most internationally educated nurses the long-term route is an employer-sponsored green card in the EB-3 category. USCIS says professional nurses are a Schedule A occupation, so the employer does not need a DOL-approved labor certification first; your wait then depends on the State Department Visa Bulletin for your country of birth.
Doctors: ECFMG certification is required for international medical graduates. Residency places are filled mainly through the National Resident Matching Program; Mayo requires USMLE Steps 1 and 2 for J-1 and Steps 1, 2 and 3 for H-1B sponsorship.
H-1B: USCIS says certain new H-1B petitions filed at or after 12:01 a.m. Eastern on September 21, 2025 must be accompanied by an additional $100,000 payment unless an exception applies, so check with the employer before relying on an H-1B. Mayo says it will not file a new H-1B that needs that payment.
How to apply
1. Pick your route
Nurses apply for jobs; doctors apply for residency or fellowship positions. The two run on different systems and timelines.2. Start Minnesota licensure early (nurses)
Order the TruMerit CES Professional Report, take an accepted English test if needed, and apply to the Minnesota Board of Nursing for licensure by examination so you can sit the NCLEX-RN.3. Search Mayo jobs
Use jobs.mayoclinic.org and its international nurse page (jobs.mayoclinic.org/InternationalRN). Check each posting for the license, experience and visa statements it makes.4. Ask about visa support at offer stage
Mayo says support depends on your visa type and may include green card sponsorship. Confirm in writing what it will file for you before you resign elsewhere.5. Doctors: apply through ERAS and the Match
Read the program's own page on college.mayo.edu, make sure your ECFMG certification and USMLE results match the visa route you need, and apply through ERAS.6. Complete VisaScreen and immigration steps
Nurses complete VisaScreen and the EB-3 process; residents complete J-1 sponsorship through ECFMG or the H-1B process with Mayo.

Questions
Mayo's international nurse page says that, depending on your visa type, it has dedicated support that may include green card sponsorship, and it encourages TN-eligible nurses to apply. It does not promise sponsorship for every role, so confirm with the recruiter.

Yes. You must hold a Minnesota RN license to work as a nurse at the Rochester campus. Foreign-educated applicants apply for licensure by examination and must pass the NCLEX-RN.
Both, under conditions. ECFMG sponsors J-1 physicians; Mayo may sponsor H-1B if you have passed USMLE Steps 1, 2 and 3 and meet other requirements. It will not file a new H-1B that requires the $100,000 payment.
Mayo publishes its stipends: $75,105 a year at graduate level 1, rising to $106,096 at level 10, effective March 11, 2026.
BLS put the median registered nurse wage in the Rochester, MN metro area at $101,660 a year in May 2025. This covers all employers, not Mayo alone.
