About Houston Methodist

Houston Methodist Hospital is the flagship of the eight-hospital Houston Methodist system, located in the Texas Medical Center.

Houston Methodist reports 1,000 operating beds, 9,078 employees, 2,518 affiliated physicians and 44,587 admissions at the flagship in 2025, and 35,425 employees across the system.

U.S. News & World Report named Houston Methodist Hospital to its 2026-2027 Best Hospitals Honor Roll, which lists 20 hospitals in alphabetical order. Houston Methodist's Academic Institute runs 88 residency and fellowship programs.

Houston Methodist is one of the few large US employers that describes its own international nurse recruitment. Its nursing publication reports a system-wide initiative run in partnership with an international nursing agency, under which nurses work as contract employees for their first two years.

For doctors, Houston Methodist runs an observership for physicians practicing abroad through Houston Methodist Global, and its residency programs list their visa options program by program. Pharmacists, therapists and other licensed staff need a Texas license from their own board, and we found no international recruitment route for them on Houston Methodist's pages.

International recruitment

  • Nurses: Houston Methodist's DiscoveRN publication (June 2025) reports that Houston Methodist The Woodlands has welcomed 15 international nurses over four years "through a system-wide initiative in partnership with an international nursing agency." The agency manages recruitment, screening and onboarding.
  • Under that model, "During their first two years, these nurses serve as contract employees." Near the end of the contract they meet department leaders to decide whether to stay, and those who stay move into the standard onboarding process for new hires. Houston Methodist does not name the agency on that page; ask any agency that approaches you whether it is Houston Methodist's partner and who signs your green card petition.
  • International nurses must complete the RN Endorsement Application through the Texas Board of Nursing, according to the same article.
  • Doctors: Houston Methodist Global runs an observership for fully trained international physicians practicing abroad and for international students, residents and fellows enrolled at a foreign institution. It is typically two to four weeks, must be requested and initiated by a Houston Methodist physician who acts as preceptor, needs at least four weeks to arrange, and does not include direct patient care or research.
  • Houston Methodist residency programs list their visa options on their own pages and on the AMA's FREIDA database. Several list J-1 sponsorship through ECFMG; H-1B is not offered by all. Check each program.

What you need before you can be hired

  • Registered nurses: a Texas RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing. Internationally educated applicants for the NCLEX submit a Credential Evaluation Service Full Education Professional report from a board-accepted provider, verification of every license held, proof of English proficiency if their program was not taught in English, a criminal background check and the Texas Nursing Jurisprudence Exam.

  • Texas time limit: internationally educated applicants must have graduated in the past four years or have practiced nursing in the past four years, and must pass the NCLEX within four years of graduation or eligibility.

  • Visa for nurses: VisaScreen is required for most foreign registered nurses before a visa is issued. For most internationally educated nurses the long-term route is an employer-sponsored green card in the EB-3 category. USCIS says professional nurses are a Schedule A occupation, so the employer does not need a DOL-approved labor certification first; your wait then depends on the State Department Visa Bulletin for your country of birth.

  • Doctors: ECFMG certification (which includes passing USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK), a residency place through ERAS and the National Resident Matching Program, any training permit the Texas Medical Board requires, and a visa the program supports.

  • H-1B: USCIS says certain new H-1B petitions filed at or after 12:01 a.m. Eastern on September 21, 2025 must be accompanied by an additional $100,000 payment unless an exception applies, so check with the employer before relying on an H-1B.

Under the model Houston Methodist describes, nurses work as contract employees for their first two years, then decide with department leaders whether to stay and join as regular hires.

Its article does not name the agency. Confirm directly with Houston Methodist before signing anything, and read the contract terms closely.

The Texas Board of Nursing requires graduation or nursing practice within the past four years, and an NCLEX pass within four years of graduation or eligibility.

Several programs list J-1 sponsorship through ECFMG; not all offer H-1B. Check each program's page and FREIDA listing.
