About Evangelismos
The General Hospital of Athens Evangelismos - Polykliniki is a public law entity (NPDD) of the Greek National Health System (ESY), supervised by the 1st Health Region of Attica.
Its history page traces it to a nursing school founded in 1875 and records the opening of the hospital on 25 March 1884. It became a public hospital in 1983.
The hospital is organised into three medical sectors, two surgical sectors, a mental health sector and a laboratory sector, plus cross-sector departments such as emergency and day care. Its surgical departments include cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, neurosurgery, urology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ENT, plastic surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery, and its medical departments include nephrology, medical oncology, pulmonology, dermatology and rheumatology. It also runs the Polykliniki unit at 3 Peiraios Street.
For an internationally trained applicant, the key point is how ESY hires. Permanent doctor posts (Consultant B, Consultant A, Director and Coordinating Director) are filled through Ministry of Health procedures that require Greek or EU citizenship, and EU citizens must show Greek at B2 or an equivalent. The hospital also publishes calls for doctors on service contracts and for auxiliary staff on its Staff Positions page.
Whatever your profession, you need Greek recognition before any of this. Doctors with a non-EU degree pass the DOATAP medicine exams and then obtain the certificate to practise from the Panhellenic Medical Association (PIS); nurses go through DOATAP and register with the Hellenic Nurses Association (ENE), which asks non-Greek citizens for C1 Greek.

International recruitment
- Evangelismos does not describe any international recruitment programme. Its Staff Positions page (Θέσεις Προσωπικού) lists calls for ESY doctors, calls for interest for doctors on service contracts paid by invoice, lists for subspecialty training and calls for seasonal or auxiliary staff, all in Greek.
- Permanent ESY doctor posts are advertised by the hospital but applications go through the Ministry of Health's online platforms. The October 2024 call for three Coordinating Directors, for example, took applications on esycoordinatingdirectors.moh.gov.gr, asked for a DOATAP equivalence for degrees from abroad, the certificate to practise, the specialty title and a medical association certificate, and asked EU citizens for Greek at B2 or a certificate from the Central Health Council (KESY) committee.
- The Ministry procedure for ESY Consultant and Director posts requires Greek or EU citizenship. This means non-EU doctors cannot hold a permanent ESY post at Evangelismos unless they acquire Greek or EU citizenship.
- Other routes exist but are narrower. Auxiliary doctor lists accept third-country nationals who hold long-term residence, an EU Blue Card or certain other residence cards. Hospitals also hire doctors on fixed-term service contracts; at AHEPA in Thessaloniki such calls accept third-country nationals with those residence cards and a Greek language certificate. Check each Evangelismos call for its own eligibility rules.
- We could not confirm from an official source whether non-EU citizens can hold permanent nursing posts at Evangelismos; nursing posts in ESY hospitals are filled through public procedures, and the nurse registration route through DOATAP and ENE applies in all cases.
What you need before you can be hired
Doctors with a non-EU degree: DOATAP recognition after passing its medicine exams in Athens, then the certificate to practise from the Panhellenic Medical Association (PIS), then registration with the Athens Medical Association.
Nurses: DOATAP equivalence with any compensatory measures, registration with the Hellenic Nurses Association (ENE) with a C1 Greek certificate, then the practice certificate from the Region.
Citizenship for permanent ESY doctor posts: Greek or EU. EU citizens show Greek at B2 or a KESY certificate, unless they studied in Greece or hold a DOATAP equivalence.
For non-ESY routes such as auxiliary lists, a residence status that allows the post, such as long-term residence or an EU Blue Card.
Fluent Greek in practice: calls, applications, exams and clinical work are all in Greek.

Questions
Not in a permanent ESY post: Consultant and Director posts require Greek or EU citizenship. Non-EU doctors with Greek recognition and a suitable residence status may be eligible for auxiliary lists or service contracts, depending on each call.
On its Staff Positions page (Θέσεις Προσωπικού) under Προκηρύξεις at evaggelismos-hosp.gr. ESY doctor applications then go through the Ministry of Health's online platforms.
Yes, whatever your profession. EU doctors applying for ESY posts must show Greek at B2 or a KESY certificate, the ENE asks non-Greek nurses for C1, and calls, exams and clinical work are in Greek.
DOATAP recognition of your degree (after its exams for non-EU degrees), the PIS certificate to practise, your specialty title and registration with the local medical association. Calls ask for all of these.
Law 4472/2017 sets basic pay as a share of the Coordinating Director's €1,903 step 1 (Consultant B 78%, Consultant A 90%), plus a hospital allowance and on-call pay. A 2026 AHEPA call gave the Consultant B salary as €2,153 gross a month.
It opened on 25 March 1884, grew from a nursing school founded in 1875, and became a public ESY hospital in 1983.
Its pages say nothing about visa sponsorship. In Greece the employer applies for approval to employ a third-country national, but permanent ESY posts are closed to non-EU citizens anyway.
