About AHEPA

The AHEPA University General Hospital of Thessaloniki stands on the campus of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. It was founded in 1951 with support from the Greek-American AHEPA fraternity and began operating in 1953 with 120 beds.

Today it describes itself as one of the largest hospitals in Greece, with 627 established beds and almost every medical and psychiatric specialty.

It is a public law entity of the National Health System (ESY), supervised by the 4th Health Region of Macedonia and Thrace, and it treats tertiary cases from across Macedonia and Thrace. It also covers the Central Thessaloniki mental health sector and runs an adolescent unit for young people aged 13 to 19.

Its Staff Recruitment page (Προσλήψεις Προσωπικού) shows how a Greek university hospital hires. Permanent ESY doctor posts, advertised in 2025 and 2026, are open only to Greek and EU citizens. The hospital also publishes calls for doctors on 12-month service contracts paid by invoice, and these explicitly accept third-country nationals who hold long-term residence, an EU Blue Card, a residence card for people of Greek origin or a second-generation residence card, if they prove knowledge of Greek.

Whatever your profession, you need Greek recognition before any of these. For the two professions this page covers, that means DOATAP exams and the PIS certificate to practise for doctors, and DOATAP and ENE registration for nurses. Calls, documents and clinical work are all in Greek.

International recruitment

  • AHEPA does not describe an international recruitment programme, but its Staff Recruitment page is unusually clear about who can apply for what.
  • Permanent ESY posts: the May 2026 call for 19 ESY specialist posts accepts candidates with Greek citizenship or citizens of EU member states, with a licence to practise and the relevant specialty title. Applications are made on the Ministry of Health platform esydoctors.moh.gov.gr, and EU citizens must show Greek at B2 or a KESY certificate unless they studied in Greece or hold a DOATAP equivalence.
  • Service contracts: calls for doctors paid by invoice (με καθεστώς έκδοσης Δελτίου Απόδειξης Παροχής Υπηρεσιών), such as the October 2026 call for an ophthalmologist, say Greek citizens, citizens of other EU states and citizens of third countries may apply, and that non-Greek candidates must prove Greek with a language certificate. Third-country nationals submit a long-term residence card, an EU Blue Card, a residence card for people of Greek origin or a second-generation residence card.
  • These service contracts last 12 months, are full time on weekdays with up to four general on-call shifts a month, and are paid at a stated gross monthly amount from which the doctor pays their own social insurance; the hospital withholds 20% tax. The doctor must register with the tax office as self-employed.
  • Nurses: we could not confirm from an official source whether non-EU citizens can hold permanent nursing posts at AHEPA. The recognition route through DOATAP and ENE registration with C1 Greek applies to all foreign-trained nurses.

What you need before you can be hired

  • Doctors: DOATAP recognition of a non-EU degree after its medicine exams, the PIS certificate to practise (βεβαίωση άσκησης ιατρικού επαγγέλματος), a specialty title and medical association registration.

  • Nurses: DOATAP equivalence, ENE registration with C1 Greek, and the practice certificate from the Region.

  • Citizenship for permanent ESY posts: Greek or EU. Service contracts are also open to third-country nationals with long-term residence, an EU Blue Card or the residence cards listed in the call.

  • Greek: B2 or a KESY certificate for EU citizens applying for ESY posts; a Greek language certificate for non-Greek candidates on service contracts.

  • For service contracts, registration with the Greek tax office as self-employed and payment of your own social insurance contributions.

How to apply

  1. Complete Greek recognition first

Pass the DOATAP exams and obtain the PIS certificate to practise (doctors), or DOATAP equivalence and ENE registration (nurses). Register with the Thessaloniki medical association if you are a doctor.
  2. Get your residence status in order

For service contracts, non-EU applicants need long-term residence, an EU Blue Card or another residence card listed in the call. Permanent ESY posts need Greek or EU citizenship.
  3. Watch the Staff Recruitment page

Check Ανακοινώσεις, then Προσλήψεις Προσωπικού, at ahepahosp.gr. Each call is a PDF with the posts, requirements, documents and deadline.
  4. Apply in the way the call states

ESY posts are applied for online at esydoctors.moh.gov.gr. Service contract calls set their own application form and list of supporting documents, including your residence card if you are a third-country national.
  5. Prove your Greek

Attach a Greek language certificate or B2 or KESY evidence, as the call requires. Applications and documents must be in Greek or officially translated.
  6. Follow the results

Rankings and decisions are posted on the same page. Successful ESY candidates are appointed by the Ministry procedure; service contract doctors sign a 12-month contract.

Pay

ESY doctors' pay is set by Law 4472/2017 and nurses in public hospitals are paid under Law 4354/2015. The Law 4472/2017 figures below are basic monthly amounts as enacted; later laws changed public pay and we found no consolidated 2026 table. AHEPA's own 2026 service contract call gives a current reference point.

Questions

Not in permanent ESY posts, which are open to Greek and EU citizens. AHEPA's service contract calls do accept third-country nationals who hold long-term residence, an EU Blue Card, a residence card for people of Greek origin or a second-generation residence card, with a Greek language certificate.

A 12-month contract for a self-employed doctor paid by invoice. In 2026 AHEPA offered €2,153 gross a month, equal to the Consultant B salary, plus up to €905.08 for on-call shifts; the doctor pays their own insurance and 20% tax is withheld.

On the Προσλήψεις Προσωπικού (Staff Recruitment) page under Ανακοινώσεις at ahepahosp.gr. ESY doctor applications then go through esydoctors.moh.gov.gr.

Yes, whatever your profession. Service contract calls ask non-Greek candidates for a Greek language certificate, ESY calls ask EU doctors for B2 or a KESY certificate, and ENE asks foreign nurses for C1.

Yes, if your degree is from outside the EU. Doctors pass the DOATAP medicine exams before PIS will issue the certificate to practise; nurses get a DOATAP equivalence before ENE registration.

It has 627 established beds on a 36,000 m² site within Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and covers almost every medical and psychiatric specialty.

Its calls do not mention visa sponsorship. Third-country nationals applying for service contracts must already hold one of the residence cards listed in the call.
