DOATAP (Hellenic NARIC): Recognition, Exams and Fees
DOATAP is the Greek body that recognises degrees from abroad. For doctors and nurses trained outside the EU, its decision is the first step to any Greek licence.
Overview
DOATAP (Διεπιστημονικός Οργανισμός Αναγνώρισης Τίτλων Ακαδημαϊκών και Πληροφόρησης) is the Hellenic NARIC, the national body that recognises the academic equivalence of foreign higher education degrees.
It works under Law 4957/2022 and in line with the Lisbon Recognition Convention. In health, its decision is what the professional bodies rely on: the Panhellenic Medical Association asks non-EU doctors for a DOATAP equivalence decision, and the Hellenic Nurses Association asks the same of nurses.
For medicine the rule is strict. Article 312 of Law 4957/2022 says that a medical degree from a recognised university outside the European Union is recognised only after exams. DOATAP's FAQ says the same applies to EU degrees awarded before the country joined the EU, while graduates of EU countries after accession contact the Ministry of Health and the medical associations directly without DOATAP exams.
For other health degrees, such as nursing, DOATAP compares your programme with a comparable Greek university programme. It can recognise the degree, refuse it, or set compensatory measures: a written exam, a placement, a thesis or a combination, completed at a Greek university department you choose.
This page is for doctors and nurses trained outside the EU, including in India, the Philippines, Nigeria, Pakistan, Kenya, the Gulf and the UK, who want to know how DOATAP works before they plan a move to Greece. It covers the online application, the fees, the new computer-based medicine exams and how long each stage takes. The Greece country page explains what happens next.
DOATAP decisions are academic. They do not by themselves let you practise. After DOATAP you still need the certificate to practise from PIS (doctors) or registration with ENE and the Region's practice certificate (nurses), and Greek at the level those bodies require.

Who it registers
- Academic equivalence of first-cycle (bachelor-level) degrees, including medicine, dentistry and nursing
- Academic equivalence of master's and doctoral degrees
- Grade correspondence on the Greek 0 to 10 scale (included in decisions under Law 4957/2022)
- National registers of recognised foreign institutions and types of qualification
- Medicine and dentistry recognition exams for degrees from outside the EU
Eligibility
- A degree from a foreign institution in the national register of recognised foreign higher education institutions, or one DOATAP can verify.
- Your degree title and transcript of records, certified with an apostille where the country is party to the Hague Convention.
- Official translations of the degree, transcript and certificate of place of study if they are not in Greek, English or French.
- Documents from every institution where you studied part of your programme.
- Taxisnet credentials, or registration as a foreign user, to apply on eDoatap.
- The €180 fee for a first-cycle degree, paid into DOATAP's account at the Bank of Greece.
- For medicine from outside the EU: willingness to sit the DOATAP exams in Athens in Greek, at €70 per subject.
How to apply
1. Check your institution and collect documents
Look up your university in DOATAP's national registers. The list of documents for each type of application is on eDoatap under Documents. Get the apostille in your country of training before you translate, because the translation must cover the apostille too.2. Arrange official translations
Translations of documents not in Greek, English or French are accepted from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs translation service, a Greek consulate, a graduate translator of the Ionian University's translation department or a lawyer in Greece. Translations from other providers are a common reason for a file being returned.3. Pay the fee and apply on eDoatap
Pay €180 into DOATAP's Bank of Greece account, with your full name in the payment reference, and upload the receipt with your application on eDoatap. DOATAP accepts applications only through eDoatap, not by post or email. You choose which Greek university department your degree will be compared with.4. Pre-check and review
After final submission you get a registration number. DOATAP first checks the file is complete and returns it to you if anything is missing. For first-cycle degrees it then checks the institution and register status, and an external evaluator may be asked to propose compensatory measures within 15 days.5. Receive the decision
The President of DOATAP's board decides, you have 5 days to confirm the details are correct, and the signed act is sent to you electronically through eDoatap. For a non-EU medical degree, the decision tells you which exam sections you must pass.6. Doctors: sit the medicine exams
Register for each exam period through the link DOATAP publishes, uploading proof of €70 per subject, and bring the original receipts on the day. You choose one or both sections; each section covers all of its subjects together and cannot be split. Results are posted on the DOATAP website, and DOATAP issues the equivalence act once you have passed every section you owe.7. Nurses and other professions: complete compensatory measures
Apply to the secretariat of the Greek university department of your choice with DOATAP's decision. You must complete all the measures at the same department and institution. DOATAP's FAQ explains what to send it afterwards so that it can issue the recognition act.8. Ask for a review if you disagree
You can ask DOATAP to review a decision issued under Law 4957/2022 within 60 days of receiving it, through eDoatap. The review fee is €150.
Exams and assessments
Preclinical sciences (medicine)
Anatomy, physiology and pharmacology: 150 multiple-choice questions from the published question bank in 3 hours 45 minutes. The pass mark is 50% with negative marking, and scores are converted to a 50 to 100 scale.
Clinical sciences (medicine)
Paediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, and obstetrics and gynaecology: 200 multiple-choice questions in 5 hours, with the same pass mark and negative marking.
Format, place and timing
The exams are taken on computers provided at an exam centre in Athens; in June 2026 this was the National Centre for Public Administration and Local Government (EKDDA) in Tavros. There are two exam periods a year; in 2026 they ran in January and June. The question bank, available on the DOATAP website, is in Greek.
Compensatory measures (other degrees)
For degrees other than medicine and dentistry, DOATAP may set a written exam, a placement or a thesis at a Greek university department, depending on the differences it finds between your programme and the Greek one.
Language requirements
- DOATAP does not set a language test for recognition. It accepts supporting documents in Greek, English or French without translation; other languages need an official translation.
- The medicine exam question bank is published in Greek, so in practice you need good medical Greek before you sit the DOATAP exams.
- A DOATAP equivalence obtained after exams matters for language later: under Decision Β' 1373/2019 it exempts doctors from submitting a separate Greek certificate to PIS.
- The Hellenic Nurses Association asks non-Greek citizens for a C1 Greek certificate, separate from the DOATAP decision.

Questions
Yes, if your medical degree is from outside the EU. PIS asks for the DOATAP equivalence decision, and DOATAP grants it for non-EU medical degrees only after you pass its exams.
No. The exam rule applies to medical degrees from outside the European Union, and the UK is not in the EU.
Preclinical sciences covers anatomy, physiology and pharmacology. Clinical sciences covers paediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, and obstetrics and gynaecology.
DOATAP does not say the exams are offered in English, and the published question bank is in Greek. Plan to study in Greek.
In Athens, on computers at an exam centre DOATAP names for each period. It does not list exam centres abroad.
The application is €180 and each exam subject is €70, so both sections at one sitting cost €490. Translations and travel to Athens are extra.
DOATAP compares it with a Greek university nursing programme and may recognise it directly or set compensatory measures, such as an exam or a placement, at a Greek university department.
DOATAP says 1 to 8 weeks for a complete first-cycle application. For doctors, the exams add time, because they are held only twice a year.
Yes. You can request a review within 60 days of receiving the decision through eDoatap, for a €150 fee.
