ENE Greece: Registration, Requirements and Fees

Every nurse in Greece must be registered with the Hellenic Nurses Association (ENE) before the Region issues the certificate to practise. Here is what ENE asks of nurses trained abroad.

Hellenic Nurses AssociationWorking in Greece

Overview

The Hellenic Nurses Association (Ένωση Νοσηλευτών Ελλάδος, ENE) is the statutory professional body for nurses in Greece, set up by Law 3252/2004 as a legal entity of public law.

Registration with ENE is compulsory: the Ministry of Health procedure for the certificate to practise as a nurse lists an ENE registration certificate among the required documents, and good standing certificates for nurses rely on ENE confirming your membership and any disciplinary matters.

ENE does not issue the licence itself. The certificate to practise as a nurse (βεβαίωση άσκησης επαγγέλματος νοσηλευτή, formerly called the licence) is a Ministry of Health procedure handled by the Regions. So the order for a nurse trained outside the EU is: DOATAP academic equivalence, ENE registration, then the Region's practice certificate.

This page is for nurses trained outside the EU, including in the Philippines, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Gulf and the UK, who want to work in Greece. It sets out the documents ENE lists for graduates of universities outside the EU, the Greek language level it asks for, its fees, and how the Region's practice certificate follows.

The biggest hurdle for most international nurses is language. ENE asks every applicant who does not hold Greek citizenship for a certificate of Greek at level C1, one of the highest levels in the Greek certification system, and all foreign documents must carry an apostille and an official Greek translation.

ENE is organised in five regional departments, based in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Larissa and Heraklion. You register with the department for the area where you will work and pay the fee into that department's bank account.

Official website: enne.gr

Who it registers

  • Nurses with a degree from a Greek university
  • Nurses with a degree from another EU country (professional recognition or automatic recognition)
  • Nurses with a degree from outside the EU, after DOATAP academic equivalence
  • Nursing specialties and further qualifications recorded on your application, such as a master's or doctorate

Eligibility

  • A nursing degree with a DOATAP (formerly ΔΙΚΑΤΣΑ) decision recognising its academic equivalence, if it was awarded outside the EU.
  • A copy of the foreign degree with the Hague apostille.
  • An official Greek translation of the degree and the apostille, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs translation service or an authorised lawyer.
  • A certificate of adequate knowledge of Greek at level C1 if you are not a Greek citizen, which ENE bases on Article 52 of Presidential Decree 38/2010.
  • A copy of your passport if you are not a Greek citizen.
  • Your licence to practise as a nurse from the country where you trained, if one was issued, apostilled and translated.
  • Two recent colour passport photos with your name on the back.
  • Proof of payment of the €35 registration fee to the regional department's bank account, with no bank commission deducted.

How to apply

  1. 1. Get DOATAP equivalence for your nursing degree

Apply to DOATAP through eDoatap. It compares your programme with a Greek university nursing programme and may set compensatory measures, such as an exam, a placement or a thesis, at a Greek university department. ENE needs the final DOATAP act, so complete any measures first.
  2. 2. Reach C1 in Greek

Book the Certificate of Attainment in Greek with the Centre for the Greek Language. C1 is taken in the main May session in Greece and abroad; for May 2027 the B2 to C2 fee is €100 and registration runs from 1 February to 14 March 2027. This is usually the longest stage.
  3. 3. Apostille and translate your documents

Get the apostille on your degree and nursing licence in your country of training, then have the documents and apostilles translated into Greek by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs translation service or an authorised lawyer. Translations from other sources may not be accepted.
  4. 4. Collect the application form from your regional department

ENE says the application and declaration form is provided by the regional department. Choose the department for the area where you will work: Attica and the Aegean islands (Athens), Macedonia and Thrace (Thessaloniki), Epirus, Aitoloakarnania, the Ionian islands and the Peloponnese (Patras), Thessaly and Central Greece (Larissa), or Crete (Heraklion).
  5. 5. Pay the fee and submit your file

Pay €35 into the regional department's bank account, without commission, and submit the receipt with your documents. The reduced fee of €25 applies to unemployed applicants and members of families with three or more children, with the supporting certificate.
  6. 6. Apply to the Region for the certificate to practise

With your ENE registration certificate, apply to the public health service of your Region. The official procedure lists the degree and DOATAP equivalence, identity documents, a solemn declaration on criminal convictions, two photos, an €8 state fee and a €3.60 fee. It has a three-month deadline, and if the authority does not object in that time the profession is considered freely practised.
  7. 7. Keep your registration current

ENE charges €30 for a declaration renewing your registration, or €20 for unemployed members and members of large families. Your ENE membership also matters if you later need a good standing certificate to work elsewhere.

Exams and assessments

  • No ENE exam

ENE does not run a licensing exam. Any assessment of your nursing training comes from DOATAP's compensatory measures.

  • DOATAP compensatory measures

If DOATAP finds differences between your programme and a Greek nursing degree, it can set a written exam, a placement or a thesis, or a combination. You take them at the Greek university department you choose and must complete them all at the same department.

  • Greek language certificate

The Centre for the Greek Language's Certificate of Attainment in Greek has written papers, and the oral exams take place straight after them. ENE asks for level C1.

Language requirements

  • ENE does not ask for an English test. It asks for Greek.
  • Applicants who do not hold Greek citizenship need a certificate of adequate knowledge of Greek at level C1 (Γ1).
  • The Region's nurse procedure asks EU citizens and third-country nationals with EU rights for Greek at B2, and does not require the certificate from third-country nationals who graduated from a Greek university. ENE's C1 requirement for non-Greek citizens is separate, so check with your regional department which certificate it will accept from you.
  • The certificate is issued by the Centre for the Greek Language. For May 2027 the exams are on 11 to 13 May in Greece and abroad, and the fee for B2 to C2 is €100.

ENE asks applicants who are not Greek citizens for a certificate at level C1. Plan your language learning around that level.

No. ENE registers you. The certificate to practise as a nurse is a Ministry of Health procedure handled by the Regions, and your ENE registration is one of its documents.

The regional department for the area where you will work. There are five, based in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Larissa and Heraklion.

ENE lists the translation service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or an authorised lawyer. Documents from Hague Convention countries also need an apostille, which is translated with them.
