What is GMC Online?

GMC Online is the self-service portal of the General Medical Council (GMC). The GMC says you can use your account to manage your registration, keep your contact details up to date, maintain your revalidation details and print a certificate of proof of entry on the medical register. Your account is tied to your GMC reference number, which stays with you for life.

For an international medical graduate it is the first thing you set up, often long before you are registered.

What you use it for before registration

  • Booking PLAB. PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 bookings are made through your account.
  • English evidence. You enter IELTS or OET results in the My Tests section, and the GMC verifies them.
  • Applying. Applications for registration are made in the My Registration section under My Applications. The GMC gives you three months to submit an application once you have started it.
  • Linked checks. Your EPIC verification of your primary medical qualification feeds into the application.

Set the account up as soon as you decide on the UK, because English results and PLAB bookings both depend on it. Check that your name matches your passport and test certificate exactly, and keep the email address current, since the GMC uses it for every update.

What you use it for once registered

  • Annual fee. The fee is due on the anniversary of your registration. The GMC says it emails you a month before, and you can view and print your bill in GMC Online. From 1 April 2026 the annual fee is £481 with a licence to practise or £172 without.
  • Revalidation. You update your connection to a designated body or suitable person, submit an annual return if you have no connection, and book a revalidation assessment if needed.
  • Contact details and preferences. The GMC says the best way to keep your address up to date is to change it in GMC Online.
  • Certificates. You can ask the GMC to send a certificate of good standing to another regulator. The GMC says it usually processes requests within 10 working days and certificates are valid for three months from issue.

How to set up or recover your account

  1. If you are new to the GMC, start with its eligibility checker, which guides you to create an account if you can apply.
  2. Create your login and keep the email address current, because GMC messages and bills go there.
  3. If you have a reference number but have not signed in for a long time, activate or update the account; the GMC has asked doctors who had not used GMC Online since August 2021 to do this.
  4. Use the GMC's logging-in help pages or contact the GMC if you cannot get in.

Common problems

  • Letting an application lapse after the three-month window.
  • Requesting good standing certificates too early. They last three months.
  • Missed fee emails sent to an old address. Keep your email current so you see the bill a month before it is due.
