EPIC verification

Definition

EPIC (Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials) is ECFMG's service for primary source verification of doctors' credentials: ECFMG checks your degree or other credential directly with the institution that issued it and sends a verification report to the regulator you choose. The GMC uses it to verify the primary medical qualification of doctors who qualified outside the UK.

Also called: EPIC, Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials, ECFMG EPIC, EPIC ID, MyIntealth

What is EPIC?

EPIC is run by ECFMG, a division of Intealth, through its online platform MyIntealth. You upload credentials related to your medical education, training and registration; ECFMG verifies each one with its issuer; and verified credentials stay in your portfolio so you can send reports to regulators, hospitals and other organisations later. Organisations receive EPIC reports at no cost.

EPIC accepts credentials such as your final medical diploma, transcripts, internship and postgraduate training certificates, specialist qualifications, registration certificates and certificates of good standing. It is for physicians only.

Organisations only see the reports and credentials you choose to send them, not your whole portfolio. A recipient receives the verification report, a copy of the credential and any English translation you supplied. Recipients who are not EPIC account holders receive a link that gives access to a single report for 90 days.

Who needs it

  • UK: the GMC requires verification through EPIC if you qualified at a medical school outside the UK and do not already hold provisional registration.
  • Ireland: the Medical Council is one of ECFMG's EPIC partner organisations with its own instructions.
  • USA: if you are pursuing ECFMG certification, ECFMG says you do not need EPIC; your diploma and transcript are verified within certification.

How to do it for the GMC

  1. Check on GMC Online that your primary medical qualification is acceptable.
  2. Create a MyIntealth account and verify your identity with an online-notarised identification form.
  3. Establish an EPIC Portfolio and select the General Medical Council.
  4. Upload your final medical diploma, with a translation if it is not in English, and choose the GMC to receive the report.
  5. Once ECFMG has sent it to your school for verification, you can apply to the GMC and give it your MyIntealth or EPIC ID.

How long it takes and what it costs

For requests from 1 April 2026, ECFMG charges $110 to establish a MyIntealth account, $35 to establish an EPIC Portfolio, $110 per credential verification and $60 for an EPIC report. Your school may charge its own fee.

ECFMG processes an uploaded credential within five business days and says about 80% of credentials are verified within 30 days and 90% within 90 days. The GMC says most schools respond within 90 days, but it keeps applications open for only 90 days, so start EPIC early. Requests to share a report with the GMC expire if you do not apply within 12 months of verification.

Common problems

Not selecting the GMC when you upload, names that differ between your passport and diploma, uploading a transcript instead of the final diploma, missing translations and slow paper-only schools cause most delays. Verification cannot be expedited. Our EPIC verification guide covers each step in detail.

If your school does not accept requests electronically, ECFMG offers an optional courier service for sending the request, for an extra fee. If your credentials were already verified by ECFMG for certification, ECFMG reviews your record, typically within 10 business days, and adds acceptable verifications to your portfolio without a new verification fee.

Questions

ECFMG says about 80% of credentials are verified within 30 days and 90% within 90 days. Most of the time depends on how quickly your medical school responds.

From 1 April 2026, the account costs $110, the portfolio $35 and each credential verification $110, with $60 for an EPIC report. A doctor verifying only a final diploma pays the account, portfolio and one verification fee, plus any report fee and any school fee.

Yes, once ECFMG has sent your qualification to your institution for verification. The GMC recommends waiting until it is complete if possible, because it keeps applications open for 90 days.

No. ECFMG verifies your final diploma and transcript as part of ECFMG certification. EPIC is used mainly for regulators outside the USA and for credentials outside certification.

The GMC asks for certificates of good standing to be sent to it by the issuing regulator, not through EPIC. Some other EPIC partner organisations do ask for them through EPIC.

Yes. ECFMG shows progress in the My Cases section of MyIntealth and emails you when your credential is sent for verification and when it is verified. The GMC cannot give progress updates.
