About Tays
Tampere University Hospital (Tays) is the university hospital of the Wellbeing Services County of Pirkanmaa (Pirha), which took over health, social and rescue services in the region on 1 January 2023.
Pirha says it is the largest wellbeing services county in Finland, serving 23 municipalities and more than 520,000 residents, and the largest employer in Pirkanmaa, with more than 19,000 professionals.
Tays provides expertise in nearly all medical specialties across four hospitals: Tays Central Hospital in Tampere, Tays Hatanpää, Tays Valkeakoski and Tays Sastamala. Most patients are treated at Tays Central Hospital. In Newsweek's World's Best Hospitals 2026 it was ranked 3rd in Finland.
Pirha's English careers page is unusually specific for international applicants. Every vacancy in the county requires at least Finnish at level B1.1, and the page explains what doctors and dentists trained outside the EU/EEA must do before they can be licensed.
Tampere is also where doctors trained outside the EU/EEA take their Finnish licensing examinations, at Tampere University. Pirha invites doctors to send an open application through Kuntarekry and says it will make contact.

International recruitment
- Pirha does not describe a recruitment programme abroad, but its English careers page explains the route for international applicants. All vacancies in the county require a minimum Finnish proficiency of B1.1.
- For doctors and dentists trained outside the EU/EEA, Pirha says you must complete a medical internship under the licensing process, show sufficient language proficiency and pass the required examinations before you can be licensed; dentists must also work under a restricted licence for at least a year. Pirha invites doctors to send an open application via Kuntarekry.
- For practical nurses and registered nurses, Pirha says working in Finland usually requires authorisation and points to the national instructions. Nursing vacancies are on Kuntarekry, and you can also send an open application.
- Some Pirha text still names Valvira; since 1 January 2026 the right to practise is granted by LVV.
What you need before you can be hired
Right to practise from LVV. Doctors, nurses, midwives and other licensed professionals need the right to practise (laillistaminen) from the Finnish Supervisory Agency (Lupa- ja valvontavirasto, LVV), which took over Valvira's duties on 1 January 2026. Many employer pages still say Valvira; it is the same function, and rights granted by Valvira remain valid.
Doctors trained outside the EU/EEA. LVV recognises the degree, then you complete a 6-month supervised internship in Finland, pass three examinations at Tampere University in Finnish or Swedish, and work on limited licences (up to 2 years) before full legalisation.
Nurses trained outside the EU/EEA. There is no national exam. LVV compares your training with the Finnish degree and usually issues a decision listing additional studies you must complete at a Finnish educational institution.
Finnish at Pirha. Every Pirha vacancy needs Finnish at B1.1 or above. Finnish or Swedish. English is not accepted. LVV's usual proof is the National Certificate of Language Proficiency (YKI) intermediate test with at least level 3 in every skill. Doctors need YKI level 4 (B2) before the practical patient care examination.
Residence permit. Most health professionals use the specialist permit (at least €3,937 a month gross in 2026) or the residence permit for an employed person (pay at the collective agreement rate and at least €1,600 a month gross in 2026). LVV says processing for applicants from outside the EU/EEA takes at least 4 months once it has every document.
How to apply
Apply to LVV
