About HUS

HUS Helsinki University Hospital is the biggest healthcare provider in Finland and one of its largest employers. It is responsible for specialised healthcare in the Uusimaa region, and the treatment of many rare and severe diseases is centralised nationally at HUS.

It reports 26,500 employees in 2025, in more than 300 professions.

In 2025 HUS treated 711,000 patients, carried out 95,000 surgical procedures and 3 million outpatient appointments. Its figures also list 16,400 babies delivered and 410 organ transplants, and it says it has 21 hospitals. In Newsweek's World's Best Hospitals 2026 it was ranked 1st in Finland.

HUS has an English careers section and a page on applying as an international professional, as a doctor, nurse or in other roles. It describes a diverse and inclusive work community, but its official working languages for all positions are Finnish and Swedish, and it assesses your language skills during recruitment.

Some HUS pages still refer to Valvira; since 1 January 2026 the right to practise is granted by the Finnish Supervisory Agency (LVV). Vacancies are advertised in Finnish on HUS's online recruitment system.

International recruitment

  • HUS says you can apply to work with it as an international professional, as a doctor, nurse or in other roles, and has an English page on what you need to check first: the right to practise, language and residence permit.
  • Its official working languages for all positions are Finnish and Swedish. You must have sufficient spoken and written language skills for your duties, HUS assesses this at the recruitment stage, and healthcare professionals must also prove Finnish or Swedish to the licensing authority.
  • HUS says applicants are responsible for the cost of the licensing decision and any additional training. It does not describe relocation packages or a recruitment programme abroad on these pages.
  • Vacancies are in Finnish on HUS's online recruitment system. The application period is usually 2 to 4 weeks, and HUS says it calls candidates within two weeks of the deadline to arrange a first interview, sometimes by video.

What you need before you can be hired

  • Right to practise from LVV. Doctors, nurses, midwives and other licensed professionals need the right to practise (laillistaminen) from the Finnish Supervisory Agency (Lupa- ja valvontavirasto, LVV), which took over Valvira's duties on 1 January 2026. Many employer pages still say Valvira; it is the same function, and rights granted by Valvira remain valid.

  • Doctors trained outside the EU/EEA. LVV recognises the degree, then you complete a 6-month supervised internship in Finland, pass three examinations at Tampere University in Finnish or Swedish, and work on limited licences (up to 2 years) before full legalisation.

  • Nurses trained outside the EU/EEA. There is no national exam. LVV compares your training with the Finnish degree and usually issues a decision listing additional studies you must complete at a Finnish educational institution.

  • Language at HUS. HUS's working languages are Finnish and Swedish for all positions; it assesses your language at recruitment. Finnish or Swedish. English is not accepted. LVV's usual proof is the National Certificate of Language Proficiency (YKI) intermediate test with at least level 3 in every skill. Doctors need YKI level 4 (B2) before the practical patient care examination.

  • Residence permit. Most health professionals use the specialist permit (at least €3,937 a month gross in 2026) or the residence permit for an employed person (pay at the collective agreement rate and at least €1,600 a month gross in 2026). LVV says processing for applicants from outside the EU/EEA takes at least 4 months once it has every document.

How to apply

  1. Apply to LVV

Apply for the right to practise. Doctors trained outside the EU/EEA follow the internship and examination route; nurses usually receive a decision on additional studies.
  2. Prove Finnish or Swedish

Take the YKI intermediate test and reach at least level 3 in every skill (level 4 for doctors before the practical examination).
  3. Search HUS vacancies

Open positions are listed in Finnish on HUS's recruitment system, linked from its English careers pages.
  4. Apply online

Fill in the electronic form and attach your CV and application letter as PDFs. Confirm your application with the code HUS emails you.
  5. Interview

HUS says it calls candidates within two weeks of the closing date. Interviews may be by video, and leadership posts may include a psychological assessment.
  6. Residence permit

If you are not an EU citizen, check with Migri whether you need a residence permit and apply once you have an offer.

Pay

Pay in Finland's public hospitals is set by national collective agreements negotiated by KT (the employer organisation for municipalities and wellbeing services counties): the SOTE agreement 2025 to 2028 for nurses, midwives and most other health staff, and a separate agreement for doctors. The agreements set basic pay by pay group, and your actual pay also depends on the level of the post and local decisions. We do not quote per-hospital figures. Statistics Finland earnings data are on our Finland country page.
