About Radboudumc

Radboudumc is the university medical centre for patient care, research and education in Nijmegen.

Its key figures for 2025 list 12,702 employees, 219,010 patients, 22,939 admissions, 485,464 consultations and 30,918 operations, with 3,446 students.

All patient care takes place in 11 centres, including the Amalia Children's Hospital, the centres for oncology, cardiovascular care, brain and senses, acute and critical care, and trauma, reconstructive surgery and movement. Its own vacancies describe the emergency department as a level I trauma centre.

Radboudumc has an International Office HR (IOHR) for incoming staff. New employees from outside the EU are contacted by the International Office first, which arranges the immigration process before passing them to their HR officer. Radboudumc warns that the IND procedure can take up to 90 days.

Its careers site is in Dutch, as are its clinical vacancies, and clinical roles need BIG registration and Dutch at the BIG register's levels. Pay follows the Cao umc.

International recruitment

  • Radboudumc's International Office HR (IOHR) supports long-stay international employees, meaning those working for more than 90 days. Once the department notifies IOHR of your arrival through HR self-service, IOHR contacts you and arranges the immigration with you. It says an MVV and residence permit procedure can take up to 90 days at the IND.
  • New employees from outside the EU are contacted by the International Office first, which helps with practical matters and then refers them to their HR officer. Employees from inside the EU go directly to their HR officer.
  • For housing, Radboudumc and Radboud University have a guesthouse run by SSH& for new international employees and guests who are moving to Nijmegen for work, with stays from one month to one year and an income limit of €75,000 (2025 price level). Radboudumc says applying does not guarantee a place.
  • Stichting Radboud universitair medisch centrum is listed in the IND public register of recognised sponsors (checked 21 October 2026). We did not find a recruitment programme for internationally trained nurses or doctors; clinicians apply directly once they have BIG registration and Dutch.

What you need before you can be hired

  • BIG registration. To work at Radboudumc as a doctor, nurse, physician assistant, pharmacist, midwife, physiotherapist or in another profession listed in Article 3 of the BIG Act, you must be in the BIG register. With a diploma from outside the EEA and Switzerland you first need a certificate of professional competence, assessed by the BIG register on the advice of the CBGV. The BIG register says the whole process takes on average 6 months to 1.5 years from your application, the application and assessment are free, and registration costs €85. Your first registration is conditional: you work for 3 months under supervision before it becomes definitive.

  • Dutch at the level the BIG register sets. You prove Dutch before you apply for recognition: B1 for nursing, B2 for higher vocational professions such as physiotherapy and midwifery, and B2+ (above B2, below C1) for doctors, dentists and pharmacists. The BIG register also asks for proof of English reading skills, and says learning Dutch to the right level takes on average one and a half to two years.

  • The BI-test. Doctors, dentists and nurses sit a professional knowledge test (BI-toets) as part of the assessment. The BIG register lists the fee for nurses as €400. For doctors it said, when we checked in October 2026, that there are no test places available at the moment and that it is not known when doctors can be scheduled again.

  • A residence permit. Non-EU staff usually come on the IND's highly skilled migrant (kennismigrant) permit, which only a recognised sponsor can apply for. Stichting Radboud universitair medisch centrum is listed in the IND public register of recognised sponsors for labour and highly skilled migrants (register updated 5 October 2026, checked 21 October 2026). In 2026 the salary must be at least €5,942 gross a month if you are 30 or older, or €4,357 if you are under 30, excluding holiday allowance; the fee is €423 and the IND decides within 90 days.

  • BIG registration for the permit. The IND states that if you will practise a profession listed in Article 3 or 36a of the BIG Act, you must be registered (or conditionally registered) in the BIG register. For doctors in specialist training the salary only has to reach the minimum wage, but the training must be recognised by the RGS or another listed committee.

How to apply

  1. Check your profession and start BIG recognition

If your job is a BIG profession, use the BIG register's advice wizard and apply for a certificate of professional competence through mijn.bigregister.nl. It is free, but it takes months and may end with extra training, so start well before you apply for jobs.
  2. Get your Dutch to the required level

Plan for the language certificate the BIG register asks for: B1 for nurses, B2+ for doctors. Certificates must be no more than two years old when you apply.
  3. Find a vacancy at Radboudumc

Search the vacancies at werkenbijradboudumc.nl. Set a job alert if nothing fits yet. Read each advert for the Cao umc scale, the hours and whether BIG registration is required.
  4. Apply online

Apply through the vacancy with your CV and motivation letter. Mention your BIG status (registered, in progress or not yet started) and your Dutch level, because both decide whether you can start in a clinical role.
  5. Immigration through International Office HR

After you are hired, your department notifies IOHR, which contacts you and arranges the MVV and residence permit with the IND. Allow up to 90 days, and start looking for housing early; the SSH& guesthouse is an option for new international staff.
  6. Start under supervision

If your BIG registration is conditional, you work your first 3 months under the supervision of a BIG-registered colleague in your profession, then send the signed supervision form to the BIG register.

Pay

All seven Dutch university medical centres pay staff under the Cao universitair medische centra (Cao umc) 2026-2027, which runs from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027. The figures below are gross monthly salaries for full working hours from the tables in force from 1 July 2026, when pay rose by 3.5% (capped at €306 a month); a further 3.5% rise follows on 1 May 2027. Full working hours are 1,872 hours a year (36 hours a week) for most staff and 2,392 hours a year for doctors in the arts-assistent group. On top of salary the cao pays an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus. Your scale depends on how the job is graded, not on your nationality. New staff start at step 0 of their scale, although a doctor's relevant experience can place them higher.
  • All general scales (1 to 18)

    €2,744 to €13,171 a month

Cao umc appendix A, from scale 1 step 0 to the top of scale 18, 1 July 2026.

    €3,626 to €5,845 a month

Cao umc appendix Aa, 1 July 2026. Which scale applies depends on how the nursing job is graded.

  • Doctors not yet specialists, including residents (scale 11a)

Cao umc appendix B, steps 0 to 10, 1 July 2026. Covers aios and anios.

    8.3% of annual salary

    Cao umc article 4.4.

Questions

Yes. Its International Office HR arranges the immigration process for long-stay employees from outside the EU once the department has registered your arrival.

There is a guesthouse run by SSH& for new international employees and guests of Radboudumc and Radboud University, for stays of one month to one year. Places are not guaranteed, so Radboudumc advises looking at other options too.

Its key figures for 2025 list 12,702 employees.

For clinical work, yes. The BIG register will not issue a certificate of professional competence without proof of Dutch: B1 for nurses and B2+ for doctors, dentists and pharmacists. Research posts such as PhD and postdoc positions are a different matter, because they do not need BIG registration.

It is listed in the IND public register of recognised sponsors for labour and highly skilled migrants, which lets it apply for a highly skilled migrant permit for you. Whether a particular job comes with sponsorship is for the employer to decide when it makes an offer.

From 1 July 2026 doctors who are not yet specialists, including residents, are paid on scale 11a, from €4,642 to €6,393 gross a month. Medical specialists are on the MS scale (€7,727 to €9,136) or the university medical specialist scale (€10,032 to €14,265). An 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus come on top.

When we checked in October 2026, the BIG register said there were no BI-test places available for doctors and that it did not know when it could schedule doctors again. Check the BIG register's test page before you plan your timeline.
