About Maastricht UMC+
Maastricht UMC+ is a partnership between the academic hospital Maastricht (azM) and Maastricht University's Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences.
Its key figures for 2023 list 546 beds, 27 operating rooms, 23,208 admissions and 367,805 outpatient consultations, with 6,437 employees at the hospital. Its careers site speaks of 8,500 colleagues.
The centre says it is known for its focus on prevention and an integrated approach, from health promotion and basic care to top clinical diagnostics and treatment. Clinically it runs the Heart+Vascular Center, a Comprehensive Cancer Center and the MosaKids children's hospital, and research is grouped in institutes such as CARIM for cardiovascular research and MHeNs for mental health and neuroscience.
Its location matters for international applicants. Maastricht lies between Belgium and Germany, and the careers site has a page for people who live across the border and work in the Netherlands. It says Maastricht UMC+ already employs many international colleagues and helps with tax, health insurance and social security questions during the application and onboarding.
Clinical staff still need BIG registration and Dutch at the BIG register's levels. Pay follows the Cao umc, and Maastricht UMC+ adds that it pays 70% of the ABP pension premium.

International recruitment
- The Maastricht UMC+ careers site has a page called Werken in Nederland (working in the Netherlands) aimed at people living in Belgium or Germany. It says the centre already employs many international colleagues and supports them with its expertise during application, onboarding and employment, and links to official cross-border worker information. Questions go to [email protected].
- Academisch Ziekenhuis Maastricht, the legal entity of the hospital, is listed in the IND public register of recognised sponsors for labour and highly skilled migrants (checked 21 October 2026).
- We did not find a programme aimed at recruiting nurses or doctors from outside the EU. Applicants from outside the EEA reach Maastricht UMC+ through the national route: BIG recognition and Dutch first, then a direct application.
- Maastricht University, its partner in Maastricht UMC+, runs separate support for international academic staff, but that service belongs to the university, not to the hospital.
What you need before you can be hired
BIG registration. To work at Maastricht UMC+ as a doctor, nurse, physician assistant, pharmacist, midwife, physiotherapist or in another profession listed in Article 3 of the BIG Act, you must be in the BIG register. With a diploma from outside the EEA and Switzerland you first need a certificate of professional competence, assessed by the BIG register on the advice of the CBGV. The BIG register says the whole process takes on average 6 months to 1.5 years from your application, the application and assessment are free, and registration costs €85. Your first registration is conditional: you work for 3 months under supervision before it becomes definitive.
Dutch at the level the BIG register sets. You prove Dutch before you apply for recognition: B1 for nursing, B2 for higher vocational professions such as physiotherapy and midwifery, and B2+ (above B2, below C1) for doctors, dentists and pharmacists. The BIG register also asks for proof of English reading skills, and says learning Dutch to the right level takes on average one and a half to two years.
The BI-test. Doctors, dentists and nurses sit a professional knowledge test (BI-toets) as part of the assessment. The BIG register lists the fee for nurses as €400. For doctors it said, when we checked in October 2026, that there are no test places available at the moment and that it is not known when doctors can be scheduled again.
A residence permit. Non-EU staff usually come on the IND's highly skilled migrant (kennismigrant) permit, which only a recognised sponsor can apply for. Academisch Ziekenhuis Maastricht, the legal entity of the Maastricht UMC+ hospital, is listed in the IND public register of recognised sponsors for labour and highly skilled migrants (register updated 5 October 2026, checked 21 October 2026). In 2026 the salary must be at least €5,942 gross a month if you are 30 or older, or €4,357 if you are under 30, excluding holiday allowance; the fee is €423 and the IND decides within 90 days.
BIG registration for the permit. The IND states that if you will practise a profession listed in Article 3 or 36a of the BIG Act, you must be registered (or conditionally registered) in the BIG register. For doctors in specialist training the salary only has to reach the minimum wage, but the training must be recognised by the RGS or another listed committee.
Cross-border workers from Belgium or Germany do not need a Dutch residence permit if they are EU citizens, but Dutch rules on tax, health insurance and social security apply; the careers site links to official cross-border information.

Its key figures for 2023 list 546 beds, 27 operating rooms and 6,437 hospital employees. The careers site mentions 8,500 colleagues.
The vacancy site is mainly in Dutch. That reflects the job: clinical roles need Dutch for BIG registration.
For clinical work, yes. The BIG register will not issue a certificate of professional competence without proof of Dutch: B1 for nurses and B2+ for doctors, dentists and pharmacists. Research posts such as PhD and postdoc positions are a different matter, because they do not need BIG registration.
It is listed in the IND public register of recognised sponsors for labour and highly skilled migrants, which lets it apply for a highly skilled migrant permit for you. Whether a particular job comes with sponsorship is for the employer to decide when it makes an offer.
From 1 July 2026 doctors who are not yet specialists, including residents, are paid on scale 11a, from €4,642 to €6,393 gross a month. Medical specialists are on the MS scale (€7,727 to €9,136) or the university medical specialist scale (€10,032 to €14,265). An 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus come on top.
