About Manchester University NHS FT (MFT)
Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) was formed on 1 October 2017.
It describes itself as one of the largest acute trusts in the UK, employing over 28,000 staff, and runs a family of hospitals that grew to ten when North Manchester General Hospital joined on 1 April 2020.
Its hospitals include Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe Hospital, Saint Mary's Hospital, Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, North Manchester General Hospital, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Trafford General Hospital, the University Dental Hospital of Manchester, Withington Community Hospital and Altrincham Hospital.
MFT is the main provider of hospital care to about 750,000 people in Manchester and Trafford and says it is the single biggest provider of specialised services in the North West of England, leading services such as breast care, vascular, cardiac, respiratory, urology cancer, paediatrics, women's services, ophthalmology and genomic medicine.
For internationally trained professionals, MFT is a licensed sponsor that recruits through advertised posts. Its dedicated international scheme is for doctors: MFT is a GMC-approved sponsoring body and runs the Manchester International Fellowship Scheme, a fixed-term training route with dedicated induction and pastoral support. Nurses, midwives and allied health professionals apply to advertised posts.

International recruitment
- MFT's careers site says it is 'a GMC-approved sponsoring body', meaning it can support overseas doctors to gain GMC registration and begin training and development in the UK.
- Through the Manchester International Fellowship Scheme, the trust welcomes doctors from outside the UK and EU for a fixed period of training, with supervision, teaching and clinical exposure, and the aim of taking those skills back to their home country. Fellows can take part in teaching, quality improvement, research and audit.
- For the first two years the trust offers international doctors an induction tailored to them, a dedicated supervisor, a peer buddy, and career advice and pastoral support.
- We did not find a dedicated international nurse recruitment page on MFT's careers site. Nurses and midwives trained abroad usually apply to advertised posts once they hold, or are working towards, NMC registration, and should ask the recruiting team whether a post can be sponsored.
- Home Office sponsor register: we checked the register of licensed sponsors (workers) on GOV.UK on 21 October 2026, in the version dated 20 October 2026. Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is listed in Manchester with an A rating for the Skilled Worker route. Being listed means the organisation can assign certificates of sponsorship; it does not mean every vacancy is open to sponsorship, so check the advert and ask the recruiting team.
What you need before you can be hired
Nurses and midwives: registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). If you trained outside the UK you pass the NMC test of competence (a computer-based test and the OSCE) and show English at NMC level, for example IELTS Academic 7 in listening, reading and speaking and 6.5 in writing, or OET grade B with C+ in writing.
Doctors: registration with a licence to practise from the General Medical Council (GMC). Most international graduates qualify through PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 or an acceptable postgraduate qualification, and the GMC asks for IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with at least 7.0 in each area, or OET Medicine grade B in every skill.
Allied health professionals such as physiotherapists and radiographers: registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) through its international route, with an HCPC-accepted English test unless you qualified in a country on its list.
Visa: if you do not already have the right to work in the UK, you need a job offer and a certificate of sponsorship from an approved employer, then usually the Health and Care Worker visa. GOV.UK sets the eligibility, salary and fee rules, not the employer.
International Fellowship Scheme: the scheme is for doctors from outside the UK and EU, and GMC registration is arranged through the trust's status as a GMC-approved sponsoring body rather than PLAB. Check the eligibility details with the trust before applying.
