About LMU Klinikum

LMU Klinikum is the university hospital of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, run on two campuses, Großhadern and Innenstadt.

Its 2025 annual report lists 1,846 beds in operation (2,062 planned beds), 11,908 staff at the end of 2025, 78,509 inpatient cases and 460,644 outpatient cases.

The hospital's international programme is for nurses. Its Stabsstelle for the integration of international nursing staff helps with the authorities and residence permits, provides B2 German courses and prepares nurses for the knowledge test with two certified practice instructors. The stated goal is recognition within the first year in Germany.

Doctors have no dedicated recruitment programme, but LMU's Institute for Medical Education runs MED-International LMU, which offers language and Kenntnisprüfung preparation courses for doctors with foreign qualifications. The Approbation itself is granted by the Regierung von Oberbayern. Midwives, therapists, pharmacists, scientists and other health professionals apply to advertised posts once their qualification is recognised in Germany where the profession is regulated.

Pay follows public sector agreements of the German states: TV-L for nurses and other staff, and TV-Ärzte for doctors, as LMU's own job adverts state.

What it is known for

  • Dr. von Haunersches Kinderspital

LMU Klinikum's children's hospital, which the 2025 annual report describes as internationally renowned; a new building is planned.

  • CAR-T cell therapy

LMU Klinikum says it was the first in Germany to set up a certified centre for CAR-T cell therapy for malignant diseases.

  • Transplant centre

The Transplantationszentrum München der LMU, named in the hospital's 2025 annual report.

  • Intensive care medicine (ZIMM LMU)

The Zentrum für Intensivmedizin München brings the hospital's intensive care units together.

  • Heart, lung and vascular centre

An interdisciplinary Herz-Lungen-Gefäßzentrum (HLG) named in the 2025 annual report.

A modern operating centre with 32 operating theatres, according to the hospital.

International recruitment

  • LMU Klinikum's Integrationsmanagement team supports nurses trained abroad through recognition. It says the process is very individual and that its goal is for recognition to be completed within the first year in Germany.
  • To apply for a recognition place at LMU Klinikum you need a B2 German certificate and the decision (Bescheid) from the Bavarian State Office for Nursing (Landesamt für Pflege). Two certified practice instructors prepare candidates for the Kenntnisprüfung.
  • The team runs B2 German courses of 90 hours twice a week, starting in March and September, and helps with residence permit extensions and document checklists.
  • The hospital's pages do not name recruitment agencies or overseas recruitment drives; applicants apply through the job portal. Nursing job adverts state that nurses trained abroad need German recognition, or must be in the process, and B2 German.
  • For doctors, MED-International LMU at the Institute for Medical Education offers language courses and Kenntnisprüfung preparation for doctors with foreign degrees. It is a training provider, not a recruitment route.

What you need before you can be hired

  • Doctors trained outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland apply to the Regierung von Oberbayern for the Approbation or a temporary Berufserlaubnis. The Bavarian service portal says German must be shown at C1 professional level, and the Kenntnisprüfung is required if equivalence cannot be established. The base fee is €400.

  • Nurses need recognition from the Bayerisches Landesamt für Pflege. Bavaria accepts a B2 certificate or its nursing language test (FSP-Pflege), which is oriented to B2. Where gaps are found you choose between an adaptation course and a knowledge test.

  • LMU Klinikum's nursing adverts ask for German at B2 if you did not train in German.

  • If you still have to complete recognition, section 16d of the Residence Act covers a residence permit for qualification measures and exams such as the Kenntnisprüfung, for up to 24 months and extendable by up to 12 months, and a recognition partnership (section 16d(3)) that lets you work for a named employer while you complete recognition. Both require at least 'sufficient' German, which section 2 of the Act defines as level A2.

  • Once you hold the Approbation, a Berufserlaubnis or full nursing recognition, the usual routes are the skilled worker residence permit or the EU Blue Card (section 18g). Employers can also use the fast-track procedure for skilled workers (section 81a) with the local foreigners authority. None of this is legal advice: check your own case with the German mission and the foreigners authority.

How to apply

  1. Get your German to B2 (nurses) or C1 (doctors)

Nurses need B2 or the Bavarian FSP-Pflege. Doctors need a C1 medical language test for the Approbation.
  2. Apply for recognition

Nurses apply to the Landesamt für Pflege for a decision on their qualification. Doctors apply to the Regierung von Oberbayern.
  3. Apply on the job portal

Search lmu-klinikum.de/jobs and apply online with a cover letter, CV and certificates. Nurses applying for a recognition place should include the Landesamt für Pflege decision and the B2 certificate.
  4. Contact the integration team

Nurses can contact the integration team by email ([email protected]) with questions about recognition places.
  5. Complete recognition on the job

The integration team prepares you for the knowledge test and helps with residence permit extensions.
  6. Visa

Apply for the visa that matches your stage of recognition at the German mission.

Pay

LMU Klinikum's job adverts state that doctors are paid under the TV-Ärzte and other staff under the TV-L, the public sector agreement of the German states. Yes, through advertised posts. LMU Klinikum's integration programme is for nurses, so midwives, physiotherapists, radiographers, pharmacists and other regulated health professionals need German recognition of their qualification, and German at the level the recognising authority sets, before they can work in their profession. Most non-medical staff are paid under the TV-L.
