About University Hospital in Kraków
The University Hospital in Kraków (Szpital Uniwersytecki w Krakowie) is an independent public healthcare unit whose founding body is the Jagiellonian University.
It works with the university's Medical College (Collegium Medicum) to treat patients, teach students and carry out research.
The hospital reports 1,279 beds in 2026, 33 clinical departments, 15 diagnostic and other units and 77 outpatient clinics. Most of its work is on the new site in Kraków-Prokocim, at ul. Jakubowskiego 2, which has 25 clinical departments and 39 outpatient clinics. Another 8 clinical departments remain in the older complex on ul. Kopernika in the city centre.
In 2025 the hospital recorded 102,270 inpatient stays, 45,992 emergency department admissions and 732,186 outpatient visits. It runs a trauma centre for emergency and disaster medicine, a university mental health centre, a surgical obesity centre and an ENETS Centre of Excellence for neuroendocrine tumours, and it takes part in European Reference Networks for rare diseases.
For an internationally trained applicant, the hospital is a large public employer of doctors, nurses, midwives and other health professionals that recruits through Polish-language job adverts and a standard selection process. It publishes no international recruitment programme. A non-EU doctor, nurse or midwife needs a Polish right to practise, by the full route or the Ministry of Health's simplified route, before the hospital can employ them in a clinical role, and other regulated professions need recognition from their own Polish body.

International recruitment
- The University Hospital in Kraków does not publish an international recruitment programme, relocation support or a page for foreign-trained staff. Its careers section (Kariera) covers job offers, information for nurses, specialist training, placements and volunteering, training courses and conferences, all in Polish.
- The hospital says it looks for people of many specialisations, both medical and administrative staff. Recent job offers include doctors in neonatology, clinical genetics, haematology, primary care, occupational medicine and the emergency department, an epidemiology nurse, an occupational therapist and a hearing test technician.
- Its stated recruitment process is: you send a CV for an advertised post, the hospital selects candidates who meet the criteria, and shortlisted candidates attend an interview with the recruiter and the head of the unit. For some posts this includes a knowledge test or a work sample or simulation, and for senior posts a further meeting with the director.
- International applicants usually reach the hospital by applying directly to an advert. Specialists and experienced nurses using the Ministry of Health's simplified route need a certificate from the employer that plans to hire them, so ask the hospital whether it will issue one for the post.
What you need before you can be hired
Right to practise: doctors and dentists get it from the regional medical chamber, and nurses and midwives from the regional chamber of nurses and midwives. With a non-EU qualification you need the full route (LEW or nostrification, the Polish language examination, the internship and the LEK for doctors) or the Ministry of Health's simplified consent.
Simplified route: open to doctors with a non-EU specialist title and at least 3 years of specialist experience in the last 5 years, and to nurses and midwives with 3 years of experience in the last 5 years. It needs a certificate from the employer, ties you to that employer and lasts at most 5 years.
Polish: the chamber grants a simplified-route right to practise only once you show a Polish certificate at B1 or higher from the Minister of Health's list. On the full route, doctors pass the Supreme Medical Council's Polish examination and nurses need an official Polish certificate. English tests are not used for licensing.
Supervision: doctors on the simplified route work for 1 year under a named specialist supervisor, and nurses and midwives work their first year under a supervisor named by the employer.
Work and residence: since a regulation of 20 November 2025, a foreigner legally staying in Poland with a right to practise as a doctor, dentist, nurse or midwife can work without a separate work permit. You still need a visa or residence permit that allows you to stay.
How to apply
1. Choose your licensing route
Check whether you qualify for the Ministry of Health's simplified route or need the full route. Start legalising or apostilling your diploma and arranging sworn Polish translations early, because every route needs them.2. Reach B1 Polish or higher
Get a Polish certificate from the Minister of Health's published list. The hospital's adverts, interviews and ward work are in Polish.3. Find a job offer
Check the current offers at su.krakow.pl under Kariera, then Oferty pracy. Each advert sets out the requirements for the post.4. Send your CV and attend the interview
Send your CV to the address in the advert. Shortlisted candidates meet the recruiter and the head of the unit, and some posts include a knowledge test or a practical work sample.5. Get the employer certificate and Ministry decision
If you are on the simplified route, ask the hospital to issue the employer's certificate, apply to the Ministry of Health within 3 months of its issue, then apply to the regional chamber with your B1 certificate for the right to practise.6. Sort out residence and start work
Apply for the visa or residence permit that fits your situation, such as a temporary residence and work permit or an EU Blue Card, then sign your contract.
