About Mater Dei
Mater Dei Hospital in Msida is Malta's main public acute general hospital, run by the Ministry for Health. It describes itself as a teaching hospital that trains medical, nursing and allied health students, and as a National Coordination Hub affiliated to 24 European Reference Networks for rare diseases.
Its cardiology and its diabetes and endocrinology departments are formally recognised as Centres of Excellence.
The hospital's own pages list a full range of acute services: an emergency department, intensive care, neonatal and paediatric intensive care, cardiac and cardiac surgical wards, neurosciences, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, plastic and burns surgery, urology, a renal unit and a hyperbaric unit.
Mater Dei does not recruit staff itself. The Ministry for Health's People Management Division explains that healthcare vacancies follow the rules of the whole Maltese public service: external calls are published in the Government Gazette and on the Public Service Recruitment Portal, and most healthcare calls require registration with the relevant Maltese council before you apply.
For internationally trained staff this has two consequences. The calls are open to Maltese and EU citizens, their family members, UK nationals with withdrawal agreement residence, and third-country nationals with long-term resident status in Malta or certain related permits. And Malta's registration route for non-EU professionals is time-limited and runs in English, so registration is achievable, but it does not by itself make you eligible for a public post.

International recruitment
- Mater Dei's own website links its careers footer to the Government Recruitment Portal and does not describe an international recruitment programme, relocation support or an OSCE or adaptation scheme of its own.
- The Ministry for Health's People Management Division says healthcare vacancies follow the rules of the whole public service. External calls are published in the Government Gazette, on the Government web portal, on the Public Service Recruitment Portal and in the Join the Public Service app. Calls for posts usually lead to indefinite appointments; calls for positions are contracts for a definite period.
- The 2026 calls we read, for Staff Nurse and for Higher Specialist Trainee posts, set the same eligibility: citizens of Malta or other EU states, people with equal treatment rights in employment, their family members, third-country nationals with long-term resident status in Malta (or a residence permit under regulation 18(3) of those regulations) and their family members, and UK nationals with a withdrawal agreement residence document. Appointing anyone other than a Maltese citizen may need an employment licence, and Jobsplus is consulted.
- In practice this means the public calls do not describe hiring nurses or doctors directly from abroad. Non-EU professionals who register with the Medical Council or the Council for Nurses and Midwives usually start with an employer that can obtain a single permit for them, such as a private hospital; we did not find an official statement on how many work at Mater Dei.
- The Staff Nurse call does accept candidates who do not yet speak Maltese, provided they pass the University of Malta's Basic Medical Maltese for the Healthcare Profession (Part 1) within the probation period: one year for degree entrants, six months for diploma entrants, with a one-time six-month extension for diploma entrants.
What you need before you can be hired
Registration with the relevant council before you apply, unless the call says otherwise: the Medical Council Malta for doctors (full registration for specialist trainee calls), the Council for Nurses and Midwives for nurses and midwives, or the CPCM for allied health professions.
Eligibility under the call: EU citizenship or equal treatment rights, or for third-country nationals long-term resident status in Malta, a related residence permit, family member status or a UK withdrawal agreement residence document.
Maltese and English. The Staff Nurse call asks for proficiency in both, allows Maltese to be obtained during probation through the Basic Medical Maltese exam, and asks for proof of English such as a nursing qualification taught in English or a valid certificate as listed in the call.
For specialist trainee posts, the relevant Certificate of Completion of Basic Specialist Training (CCBST) from Malta's Specialist Accreditation Committee or an equivalent recognised by it.
If you are a non-EU citizen without long-term residence, a work and residence permit through an employer, usually the single permit applied for by the employer with Identità.

Questions
Mater Dei does not run its own international recruitment. Its posts are filled through public service calls, which are open to third-country nationals only if they have long-term resident status in Malta or another listed status. Non-EU professionals can register with the relevant Maltese council, such as the Medical Council or the Council for Nurses and Midwives, but that alone does not make them eligible for these calls.
In the Government Gazette, on the Government web portal, on the Public Service Recruitment Portal at recruitment.gov.mt and in the Join the Public Service app. The hospital's careers link points to the recruitment portal.
Calls ask for Maltese and English. The Staff Nurse call lets you start without Maltese if you pass Basic Medical Maltese for the Healthcare Profession Part 1 within probation: one year for degree entrants, six months for diploma entrants.
In 2026, a diploma-entry staff nurse starts on Salary Scale 12 at €23,816 a year; a degree-entry nurse starts on Scale 10 at €27,055.98, rising to €29,502. Allowances depend on the post.

Yes. It says it trains medical, nursing and allied health students, and it is affiliated to 24 European Reference Networks for rare diseases.
Registration lets you seek work, not a specific job. For public service calls you also need to meet the eligibility rules; otherwise you need an employer that can apply for a single permit for you.
Calls for posts normally lead to indefinite appointments, while calls for positions are definite contracts. The 2026 Staff Nurse call was for an indefinite post; Higher Specialist Trainee calls are definite positions.
