About Gozo General Hospital

Gozo General Hospital in Victoria is the only hospital on the island of Gozo. Its website says it provides acute and complex services, emergency services, inpatient and outpatient care and community outreach, and that it also caters for psychiatric and long-term care.

It is connected to Mater Dei Hospital on the main island by 24-hour air and land ambulance services for emergency and specialised care.

Hospital departments listed on its website include cardiology, emergency, a hyperbaric unit, medical imaging, medical laboratory services, operating theatres, outpatients, pharmacy, physiotherapy, sterile supplies and a dental laboratory. Outpatient clinics cover general medicine and surgery, cardiology, diabetes, endocrinology, nephrology, neurology, obstetrics and gynaecology, palliative care and oncology, respiratory medicine and rheumatology, with nurse-led clinics.

Like Mater Dei, the hospital is part of the Ministry for Health. Its posts are filled through public service calls published in the Government Gazette and on the Public Service Recruitment Portal, and national healthcare calls state that appointees may be asked to work in any health service in Malta and/or Gozo.

For internationally trained staff, the rules are the same as for the rest of the Maltese public health service: council registration, Maltese and English, and eligibility that covers non-EU citizens mainly through long-term resident status in Malta. Maltese is the national language and widely spoken by patients, so plan to learn it.

International recruitment

  • Gozo General Hospital's website does not describe any international recruitment programme; its careers link points to the Government Recruitment Portal.
  • The Ministry for Health's People Management Division explains that healthcare vacancies follow public service rules. External calls are open to the general public and are published in the Government Gazette, on the Government portal, on the Public Service Recruitment Portal and in the Join the Public Service app, and most require registration with the relevant Maltese council before you apply.
  • The 2026 healthcare calls we read are open to citizens of Malta and other EU states, people with equal treatment rights and their family members, UK nationals with a withdrawal agreement residence document, and third-country nationals with long-term resident status in Malta or a related residence permit. They do not describe recruitment of non-EU staff directly from abroad.
  • National calls say appointees may be asked to work in any of the health care services in Malta and/or Gozo, so a post won through a national call can lead to Gozo.
  • If you are a non-EU professional without long-term residence, Malta's councils can register you on a time-limited basis, but you would then need an employer able to obtain a single permit for you before you can work.

What you need before you can be hired

  • Registration with the Medical Council Malta, the Council for Nurses and Midwives or the CPCM, usually before you apply.

  • Eligibility under the call: EU citizenship or equal treatment rights, or for third-country nationals long-term resident status in Malta, a related permit, family member status or a UK withdrawal agreement residence document.

  • Maltese and English. Staff nurses without Maltese must pass Basic Medical Maltese for the Healthcare Profession Part 1 at the University of Malta within the probation period.

  • Proof of English for nurses, such as a nursing qualification taught in English or a valid certificate listed in the call.

  • For non-EU citizens without long-term residence, a single permit obtained by an employer through Identità.

How to apply

  1. Register with your council

Apply to the Maltese council for your profession using the non-EU form. Non-EU nurses complete a bridging course and receive temporary registration for 24 months; doctors may need to pass the MCMSE.
  2. Check eligibility

Read the eligibility section of the call. Third-country nationals need long-term resident status in Malta or another listed status by the closing date.
  3. Look for Gozo and national calls

Search the Healthcare, Medical and Caring category on recruitment.gov.mt and read where each call says appointees may work; national calls can post you to Malta or Gozo.
  4. Apply on the portal

Register on the Public Service Recruitment Portal and apply before the closing time with your registration certificate, qualifications and language evidence.
  5. Interview and results

A selection board interviews candidates and publishes the results; the People Management Division posts the latest results on its website.
  6. Meet the Maltese requirement

If you were appointed without Maltese, pass Basic Medical Maltese Part 1 within probation; diploma-entry nurses get a one-time six-month extension.
