About Virgen del Rocío

Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío (HUVR) is a public university hospital of the Andalusian Health Service (Servicio Andaluz de Salud, SAS) in Seville.

It describes itself as the largest hospital complex in the Andalusian public health system. Its general hospital opened in 1955, and teaching with the University of Seville began in 1987.

The 2025 annual report gives 10,148 professionals, 8.07% of all SAS staff, including 2,054 doctors (560 of them in training) and 2,583 nurses. In 2024 the complex had 1,525 installed beds, 62 operating theatres, 44 clinical management units and a reference population of 575,068.

HUVR treats patients referred from across Spain and abroad. Its website says it runs 35 national reference centres, services or units (CSUR), 33 Andalusian reference units (UPRA) and takes part in 10 European reference networks (ERN). The Instituto de Biomedicina de Sevilla (IBiS), set up in 2006, is its research institute.

For an internationally trained professional the key fact is how the SAS hires. Permanent and temporary statutory posts are filled through the SAS job pool and competitive exams, and Spanish law requires candidates for statutory posts to be Spanish, EU or EEA nationals or to have an equivalent right recognised by law. A non-EU national without that right generally cannot be appointed to a statutory post, whatever their qualifications.

The Instituto de Biomedicina de Sevilla, created in 2006 with the regional government, the SAS, the University of Seville and the CSIC.

International recruitment

  • HUVR does not run its own international recruitment programme, and we found no page on its website about recruiting internationally trained doctors or nurses. Hiring is managed by the Andalusian Health Service.
  • Temporary staff are appointed from the SAS single job pool (Bolsa Única, BolSAS), which you join online through the SAS professionals' electronic window. Permanent posts are filled through public competitive exams (oposiciones). The hospital's 2024 report notes that its staff took part in the large SAS job stabilisation processes completed in December 2024.
  • Under article 30.5 of the Estatuto Marco, which article 33 also applies to temporary staff, candidates for statutory posts must hold Spanish nationality, the nationality of an EU or EEA state, a right to free movement of workers under the EU Treaty or other treaties, or that right recognised by law. This limits the route for non-EU nationals who do not have such a right.
  • Doctors with a homologated degree can also arrive through the national MIR exam for specialist training; HUVR trains residents and had 560 doctors in training in 2025. Foreign residents in specialist training have their own residence status under Spain's immigration regulation.

What you need before you can be hired

  • Nationality for statutory posts: Spanish, EU or EEA nationality, a treaty right to free movement, or that right recognised by law, under article 30.5 of the Estatuto Marco (Ley 55/2003).

  • Homologación. A degree from outside the EU must be homologated by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities before you can practise. The fee is €166.50.

  • Spanish at B2 for homologación, for example DELE or SIELE, unless you are a national of a Spanish-speaking country or studied mainly in Spanish.

  • College registration. Doctors and nurses must register with the provincial professional college in Seville before working.

  • Specialists. A homologated medical degree alone does not allow specialist practice in the public system; you need an MIR training place or recognition of a non-EU specialist title by the Ministry of Health.

How to apply

  1. Check whether you can hold a statutory post

Read the nationality requirement in article 30.5 of the Estatuto Marco. If you are not an EU, EEA or treaty national and have no recognised right, SAS statutory posts are not open to you.
  2. Homologate your degree and prove B2 Spanish

Apply online to the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities with legalised, translated documents and your B2 certificate.
  3. Register with the Seville college

Join the provincial college for your profession with your homologación.
  4. Join the SAS job pool

Register in BolSAS through the SAS professionals' electronic window, choosing the category and centres, including Virgen del Rocío, where you want to work.
  5. Watch for competitive exams

Permanent posts are filled through SAS public employment offers and oposiciones announced in the Andalusian official gazette (BOJA).
  6. Doctors: consider the MIR exam

Specialist training places at Virgen del Rocío are allocated through the national MIR selective test.

Pay

HUVR staff are paid on the Andalusian Health Service's pay structure. The base salary and three-yearly increments are set nationally and are the same in every regional health service; the SAS adds its own complements for post, specialty, productivity, career level and on-call work, which make up a large part of real pay. We could not confirm the SAS complement tables from an official page, so we quote only the national base figures for 2026.
  • Base salary, subgroup A1 (2026)

    €16,646.88 a year

Posts requiring a doctor-level degree, before SAS complements.

  • Trienio, subgroup A1 (2026)

Added for each three years of service.

  • Base salary, subgroup A2 (2026)

    €14,394.24 a year

Posts such as nursing, before SAS complements.

    €522.48 a year

Added for each three years of service.

  • Resident doctor (MIR)

Base salary plus 8% to 38%

Training supplement by year under Real Decreto 1146/2006, plus on-call pay.

Questions

Only if they can hold a statutory post. The Estatuto Marco requires Spanish, EU or EEA nationality, a treaty right to free movement or that right recognised by law, for both permanent and temporary statutory staff, whatever the profession. A homologated degree, B2 Spanish and college registration are also needed.

Through the Andalusian Health Service: register in the BolSAS job pool for temporary posts, or sit SAS competitive exams for permanent posts. The hospital does not run separate recruitment for international candidates.

It had 10,148 professionals in 2025 and 1,525 installed beds in 2024, and describes itself as the largest hospital complex in Andalusia's public health system.

Yes, if you win a place through the national MIR exam with a homologated medical degree. The hospital had 560 doctors in training in 2025.

Spanish. B2 is required for homologación of a foreign degree unless you are exempt, and the SAS works in Spanish.

Nurses are in subgroup A2, with a national base salary of €14,394.24 a year in 2026, plus SAS complements that make up much of total pay.
