About Hospital Clínic

Hospital Clínic de Barcelona is a public hospital with more than 100 years of history, run as a public consortium of the Government of Catalonia (through the Catalan Health Service, CatSalut) and the University of Barcelona.

It is part of Catalonia's integrated public health system (SISCAT) and covers almost all medical and surgical specialties.

Its 2025 annual report gives 7,180 professionals (not counting substitutes), 755 beds, 53,076 discharges, 662,001 outpatient visits and 33,554 operations. The average workforce in 2025 included 1,731 doctors and 3,940 nursing staff, and the hospital trains 433 resident doctors.

The Clínic is organised into 10 clinical institutes, such as cardiovascular medicine, cancer and blood diseases, neurosciences and nephrology and urology, plus diagnostic centres. Most of its research is coordinated by the IDIBAPS biomedical research institute.

For internationally trained professionals, the Clínic is one of the few Spanish hospitals whose own adverts address them: a 2026 anaesthesiology advert specifically invited professionals with recently homologated qualifications, especially from abroad. Whatever your profession, you still need Spanish homologación of your degree, B2 Spanish and registration with the professional college, and Catalan becomes a requirement for permanent posts.

What it is known for

  • CAR-T cell therapy

The Clínic says it leads clinical innovation with CAR-T therapies, with more than 500 patients treated.

  • Transplantation

In 2025 the Clínic marked 60 years since the first kidney transplant in Spain, which was performed there; nephrology and renal transplant is a service of its Institute of Nephrology and Urology.

  • Cancer and blood diseases

The Institute of Cancer and Blood Diseases brings together haematology, haemotherapy, medical oncology and radiation oncology.

  • Cardiovascular medicine

The Institute of Cardiovascular Medicine covers cardiology, cardiovascular surgery and vascular and endovascular surgery.

  • Neurosciences

Neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry and psychology, and child and adolescent psychiatry.

  • Maternal and fetal medicine

The Institute of Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Neonatology, based largely at the Maternitat site.

  • Robotic surgery

The 2025 report says the Clínic strengthened robotic surgery; it has 41 operating theatres.

International recruitment

  • The Clínic does not run a formal international recruitment programme, but its adverts address international candidates. An anaesthesiology specialist advert in 2026 sought, among others, professionals with recently homologated qualifications, especially those coming from abroad, and experienced anaesthetists wanting a temporary training stay of about six months in regional anaesthesia.
  • Vacancies are posted on jobs.clinicbarcelona.org in Catalan and Spanish, grouped by medical, nursing and other areas. You can also join the hospital's job pool by sending a CV.
  • Every advert we read carries the same note: anyone who wants to apply for a permanent (indefinite) contract call will need the level of Catalan required for that category within three years.
  • Nursing adverts say new nurses start on a temporary contract with the possibility of continuing, and list a nursing degree as the requirement. The Clínic does not mention visa sponsorship or relocation support on its careers pages.

What you need before you can be hired

  • Homologación of your degree. A degree from outside the EU must be homologated by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities before you can practise a regulated profession. The fee is €166.50. Since September 2025 applicants with a firm offer of highly qualified employment can ask for priority handling.

  • Spanish at B2. Homologación requires B2 Spanish (for example DELE or SIELE) unless you are a national of a Spanish-speaking country or studied mainly in Spanish.

  • Catalan for permanent posts. The Clínic's adverts state that candidates for an indefinite contract must reach the required level of Catalan for their category within three years.

  • College registration. Doctors and nurses must register with the professional college (colegio) of the province where they work, in Barcelona's case the Barcelona colleges, before starting.

  • Specialist doctors. A homologated basic medical degree does not on its own allow specialist practice in the public system. You either win a residency place through the national MIR exam or have a non-EU specialist title recognised by the Ministry of Health.

  • Residence permit. Non-EU nationals usually need a highly qualified professional permit, an EU Blue Card or an employee residence and work permit; for regulated professions these require the homologación.

How to apply

  1. Homologate your degree

Apply online to the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities with legalised and translated documents. If you have a firm job offer, ask for priority handling.
  2. Prove B2 Spanish and start Catalan

B2 Spanish is needed for homologación. Start Catalan early if you want a permanent post, because the Clínic requires it within three years for indefinite contracts.
  3. Register with the professional college

With your homologación, register with the relevant Barcelona college for your profession.
  4. Search Clínic vacancies

Browse jobs.clinicbarcelona.org by area (medicine, nursing, other degrees) or send your CV to the job pool.
  5. Apply through the advert

Apply online. Each advert lists the certificates and licences needed; HR can be contacted at [email protected].
  6. Arrange your residence permit

If you are not an EU national, plan the work permit with the employer: a highly qualified professional permit, an EU Blue Card or an employee permit.

Pay

The Clínic is a public consortium that employs its own staff, so its pay is not simply the Ministry of Finance civil service table used by regional health services; we could not confirm which collective agreement sets Clínic pay. The Clínic does publish salary bands on some adverts. The national figures below show the legal base salary for public health service staff in 2026, to which regional and post complements are added.
  • Nurse, inpatient ward (advert, October 2026)

    €35,000 to €42,000

Salary band on a Clínic nursing advert. The advert labels it per month, which looks like an error for gross annual pay, so confirm the period with HR.

  • Base salary, subgroup A1 (2026)

    €16,646.88 a year

National base for public health service posts requiring a doctor-level degree, before complements.

  • Base salary, subgroup A2 (2026)

    €14,394.24 a year

National base for posts such as nursing, before complements.

  • Resident doctor (MIR)

Base salary plus 8% to 38%

Training supplement by year under Real Decreto 1146/2006, plus on-call pay.

Questions

Its adverts do address them. A 2026 anaesthesiology advert invited professionals with recently homologated qualifications, especially from abroad. Every regulated profession needs homologación and college registration first, and doctors also need MIR training or recognition of their specialist title for specialist practice.

Not to start. The Clínic's adverts say candidates for a permanent contract must reach the required level of Catalan within three years. Spanish at B2 is required for homologación.

A Clínic inpatient nursing advert in October 2026 gave a salary band of €35,000 to €42,000; confirm with HR whether this is gross annual pay.

In 2025 it had 7,180 professionals, 755 beds, 53,076 discharges and 33,554 operations.
