About UNLP Košice
Univerzitná nemocnica L. Pasteura Košice (UNLP) is a state contributory organisation whose founder is the Slovak Ministry of Health.
It describes itself as the second largest hospital in Slovakia and the end-referral hospital for the whole region of eastern Slovakia.
The hospital works across two campuses: the historic 'old hospital' at Rastislavova 43, opened as the State Hospital in Košice on 24 June 1924, and the 'new hospital' at Trieda SNP 1, whose inpatient wing opened in 1981. Its own pages give more than 1,356 beds and 3,530 employees, with 46 clinical departments: 25 clinics, 11 departments, 9 specialised centres and 3 institutes.
UNLP is the teaching base of the Faculty of Medicine of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University (UPJŠ) in Košice and of the Faculty of Health Care of the University of Prešov, as well as several secondary health schools. It also runs biomedical research and clinical trials.
For an internationally trained health professional, UNLP is the largest public employer in eastern Slovakia. Clinical work is in Slovak, so you follow the national recognition route: recognition by SUDV, the supplementary exam in Slovak and chamber registration, with the option of starting as a supervised trainee.

International recruitment
- UNLP's own careers pages do not describe an international recruitment programme, relocation package or support for applicants trained outside the EU, and its adverts are in Slovak. We found no hospital page naming a recruitment agency or a partner country.
- Its adverts say serious applicants have the door open all year round, so nurse vacancies are not limited to a closing date. You send a CV with a short application, saying which department you would like to work in, and suitable candidates are invited to interview.
- International applicants therefore reach UNLP by applying directly to its personnel department ([email protected]), usually once SUDV has recognised their formal qualification. At that point Slovak law lets a hospital employ you as a supervised temporary trainee for up to 18 months while you prepare for the supplementary exam in Slovak.
- Before you rely on the hospital to arrange permits, ask the personnel department whether it will apply to the labour office for confirmation that the vacancy can be filled, which is the basis for temporary residence for employment.
What you need before you can be hired
Recognition of your qualification: with a diploma from outside the EU, apply to the Centre for the Recognition of Diplomas (SUDV) at the Ministry of Education. The first decision recognises your formal qualification; after the supplementary exam you apply again for recognition of your professional qualification.
Supplementary exam in Slovak: doctors sit it at the Faculty of Medicine of the Slovak Medical University in Bratislava; nurses with a bachelor's degree at its Faculty of Nursing and Health Professional Studies. It has a written and an oral part and is held only in Slovak.
Temporary professional traineeship: after the first recognition decision you can work under supervision for up to 18 months, without interruption, at one provider and only once. You give the employer a declaration that you know Slovak or English to the extent needed, and the employer must notify the Ministry of Health.
Slovak language: knowledge of the state language to the extent needed for your profession is a condition of practising. Passing the supplementary exam counts as proof; otherwise the Ministry of Health tests your Slovak.
Chamber registration: doctors register with the Slovak Medical Chamber and nurses and midwives with the Slovak Chamber of Nurses and Midwives when they start work.
Residence and work: non-EU staff usually need temporary residence for employment, based on a labour office confirmation that the vacancy can be filled, or an EU Blue Card. Shortage lists are published per region every quarter; check the Košice region list for your role. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens need no permit.

Yes, to practise independently. The supplementary exam for non-EU professionals is held only in Slovak and Slovak is a legal condition of practising. For a supervised temporary traineeship of up to 18 months, a declaration that you know Slovak or English to the extent needed is enough.
Its 2026 advert lists gross basic pay from €1,524 a month for professional nursing activities, €1,676.40 for specialised activities and €1,752.60 for advanced practice or nursing management, for a full-time nurse with no years of practice. Pay rises with years worked, and allowances are added.

Slovak law allows a supervised temporary traineeship for up to 18 months at one provider after SUDV recognises your formal qualification. Ask UNLP's personnel department whether a post is available on that basis.
Usually temporary residence for employment, based on a labour office confirmation that the vacancy can be filled, or an EU Blue Card. Check the Košice region shortage list for your occupation, since listed roles skip the labour market test.
