About Riga East University Hospital

Riga East Clinical University Hospital (SIA Rīgas Austrumu klīniskā universitātes slimnīca), often called East Hospital or aSlimnīca, describes itself as the largest multi-profile medical institution in Latvia.

It provides diagnosis and treatment, research and innovation, training of new specialists and public health education.

The hospital says it treats about 55,000 inpatients and 840,000 outpatients a year, has more than 2,000 beds across the hospital, performs more than 72,000 operations a year and is home to almost 5,000 employees. Its careers page puts the workforce at more than 4,500.

It is made up of five inpatient sites: Gaiļezers, the Latvian Oncology Centre, Biķernieki, the Latvian Centre of Infectious Diseases and the Centre of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases. It says it provides services not available in other Latvian inpatient institutions, including microsurgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, toxicology and sepsis, polytrauma, burns and frostbite, paediatric audiology, stem cell transplantation, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS treatment, and stereotactic radiotherapy.

For an international applicant, the hospital is Latvia's biggest single clinical employer and has treated large numbers of patients injured in the war in Ukraine. But it hires on Latvian terms: recognition of your qualification, registration with the Health Inspectorate and Latvian at C1.

International recruitment

  • Riga East University Hospital does not publish an international recruitment programme for doctors or nurses from outside the EU, and it names no recruitment agency. Its careers pages and vacancies are in Latvian, grouped into administration, care, doctors and specialists, technical staff and the Hospital at Home service.
  • The hospital's English site carries a separate notice on job opportunities for Ukrainian medics, written for people displaced by the war, not a general route for other nationalities.
  • Doctor vacancies we saw in October 2026 included internists, anaesthetists, radiologists, infectious disease doctors and oncologists, some also open to an 'ārsts stažieris'. Applications are handled through an external recruitment platform linked from each advert.
  • International applicants usually reach the hospital after recognition in Latvia: the Academic Information Centre evaluates your documents, the Latvian Medical Association decides for doctors and the Health Inspectorate for general care nurses, and the Health Inspectorate registers you as a medical practitioner.

What you need before you can be hired

  • Recognition of your qualification. For qualifications from outside the EU, you submit documents through the Academic Information Centre (AIC). The Latvian Medical Association decides for doctors and dentists and the Health Inspectorate for general care nurses. The AIC says decisions are due within 6 to 12 months of a complete file, and an aptitude test or adaptation period can be required.

  • Registration. The Health Inspectorate enters you in the Register of Medical Practitioners after you submit your recognition certificate and a state language certificate.

  • Latvian at C1. Cabinet Regulation No. 157 sets C1 for doctors, nurses, midwives and physician assistants. Certification exams for doctors are held in Latvian.

  • Residence permit. The employer registers the vacancy with the State Employment Agency for at least 10 working days and submits a sponsorship request to OCMA; you then apply for a residence permit with the right to work. A new Immigration Law took effect on 15 September 2026.

How to apply

  1. Get your qualification recognised

Apply through the Academic Information Centre. Expect 6 to 12 months for a non-EU qualification, and possibly an aptitude test or adaptation period.
  2. Pass the Latvian test at C1

Book the state language test with the State Education Development Agency; non-EU citizens pay a €52 fee.
  3. Register with the Health Inspectorate

  4. Browse the careers pages

Vacancies are at aslimnica.lv/karjera, split into doctors and specialists, care staff, administration, technical staff and Hospital at Home.
  5. Apply through the advert link

Each advert links to the hospital's recruitment platform, where you submit your CV and application for that post.
  6. Arrange your permit

If you are not an EU citizen, the hospital registers the vacancy and submits the OCMA sponsorship request before you apply for a residence permit.
