About KBC Rijeka

Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka (Klinički bolnički centar Rijeka, KBC Rijeka) was entered in the court register on 3 September 1984, bringing together five earlier hospitals in and around Rijeka.

It is one of five clinical hospital centres in Croatia and the regional hospital for three counties, caring for about 600,000 people.

Its profile page lists 18 clinics, 6 clinical institutes, 7 independent institutes and a hospital pharmacy, with 1,069 beds and more than 3,800 employees. Each year it admits more than 40,000 patients, records about 200,000 bed days and provides about 600,000 outpatient examinations. It works on two sites, Rijeka (Krešimirova 42) and Sušak, including a new hospital complex at Sušak where it plans to bring services together.

KBC Rijeka is the main teaching base of the University of Rijeka's Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Health Studies and Faculty of Dental Medicine, and hosts 13 clinical referral centres of the Ministry of Health.

It advertises posts in open tenders (natječaji) on its website. In October 2026 these included 25 permanent posts for nurses, 4 for midwives and a specialist in gynaecology and obstetrics. Clinical posts require a licence for independent work, so foreign-trained staff need Croatian recognition, B2 Croatian and chamber registration before they apply.

International recruitment

  • KBC Rijeka does not describe an international recruitment programme on its website. Its Natječaj zaposlenje page lists tenders for permanent and fixed-term posts, selection decisions and lists of applicants, in Croatian.
  • The October 2026 tender for 25 nurses (bachelor of nursing or nurse-technician) asked for a nursing degree or secondary nursing school, a passed professional exam and a licence for independent work, with a CV, copies of qualifications and licence, the HZMO record of work experience, proof of citizenship and a certificate that no criminal proceedings are pending.
  • The tender asks for proof of citizenship but does not say that applicants must be Croatian or EU citizens. In practice, the licence for independent work is the barrier: you must have your qualification recognised by the HKMS or HLK, pass any adaptation period or aptitude test, show B2 Croatian and register before you can apply.
  • Applications for that tender were due within 30 days of publication in the Narodne novine (Official Gazette), sent by post or delivered in person to the registry office at Krešimirova 42. The hospital may also test candidates.
  • Once selected, a non-EU candidate needs the employer to apply for a stay and work permit, which for a regulated profession must include the recognition decision. Croatia also has an EU Blue Card route for highly qualified posts.

What you need before you can be hired

  • Recognition of your foreign qualification by the Croatian Nursing Council (HKMS) or the Croatian Medical Chamber (HLK), including any adaptation period or aptitude test.

  • For nurses, the HKMS competency check (a written exam and, if passed, an oral exam the same day) where it is set as a compensation measure.

  • Croatian at B2 or above from an authorised institution.

  • Chamber registration and a licence for independent work, plus the professional exam (stručni ispit) that the tenders ask for.

  • A stay and work permit applied for by the employer, including the recognition decision for a regulated profession.

How to apply

  1. Get recognised and licensed

Apply to the HKMS or HLK under the general system for third-country qualifications, complete any compensation measure, and register for your licence for independent work.
  2. Learn Croatian to B2

Both chambers require a B2 certificate before registration, and KBC Rijeka's tenders, interviews and clinical work are in Croatian.
  3. Find a tender

Check Natječaj zaposlenje at kbc-rijeka.hr for permanent (neodređeno) and fixed-term (određeno) posts. Each tender is a PDF with the conditions and documents.
  4. Prepare the documents

Typically a cover letter and CV, copies of your diploma, professional exam certificate and licence, your HZMO work experience record, proof of citizenship and a recent certificate that no criminal proceedings are pending. Give an email address for correspondence.
  5. Submit by post or in person

Send the application to KBC Rijeka, Krešimirova 42, Rijeka, or hand it in at the registry office, within the deadline. The October 2026 nurse tender allowed 30 days from publication in Narodne novine.
  6. Testing, decision and permit

KBC Rijeka may test candidates and publishes selection decisions on the same page. A non-EU candidate then needs the employer's stay and work permit application before starting.

Pay

Pay in Croatian public hospitals follows public-service pay rules and the collective agreement for the health and health insurance sector published by the Ministry of Health. We could not confirm an official, current 2026 pay table for doctors or nurses, and KBC Rijeka's tenders do not state salaries, so we give no figures.

Questions

It does not run an international recruitment programme. Its tenders for clinical posts, for example the October 2026 tenders for nurses, midwives and a specialist doctor, ask for a licence for independent work. A foreign-trained doctor, nurse, midwife or other health professional must first be recognised and registered by the relevant Croatian chamber, such as the HLK for doctors or the HKMS for nurses, and show B2 Croatian.
