About AP-HP

Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) is the university hospital trust (CHU) of the Paris region. It calls itself the first CHU in Europe.

Its 38 hospitals are grouped into 6 university hospital groups (GHU) and 80 medical-university departments, and its own figures give more than 8 million patients a year.

AP-HP says it has 100,000 staff in 230 occupations. Its 2025 summary, with data at 31 December 2024, lists 12,000 doctors, 760 midwives and 54,000 paramedical and socio-educational staff, and calls AP-HP the largest employer in the Ile-de-France region. It made 5,900 hires in 2024, and its careers site says it recruits about 10,000 people a year.

AP-HP is also a major teaching and research centre. It trains about 8,700 paramedical students and 5,300 interns (junior doctors in training) a year, runs 15 nursing schools (IFSI) and is linked to seven universities in the region. It says half of France's clinical research takes place at AP-HP.

For an internationally trained professional, AP-HP is a large public employer with posts in almost every specialty and profession. It has no recruitment campaign aimed at non-EU clinicians. Doctors from outside the EU usually arrive through the national EVC exam and an assigned post as praticien associé. Nurses with non-EU diplomas need a French authorisation or the French nursing diploma before they can work as nurses, and midwives, pharmacists and allied health professionals likewise need the right to practise in France first. Work is in French.

What it is known for

  • Organ transplantation

    AP-HP's 2025 summary reports 2,125 transplants, with data at 31 December 2024.

  • Emergency care and SAMU

25 general emergency departments (17 adult, 8 paediatric), more than 1.4 million emergency attendances a year and the AP-HP SAMU emergency medical service.

  • Cancer care

Four integrated cancer research sites (SIRIC), one of them paediatric, and dedicated pages for adult and childhood cancers.

  • Maternity and women's health

13 maternity units and about 36,000 births a year in the 2025 summary.

  • Children's care

8 paediatric emergency departments and hospitals including Necker-Enfants malades, with AP-HP pages for childhood and adolescent cancers.

  • Clinical research

8 university hospital institutes (IHU), about 11,000 publications and 920 active patents, and Europe's largest health data warehouse according to AP-HP.

International recruitment

  • AP-HP's careers site does not describe a programme for recruiting internationally trained doctors or nurses. Its job offers, open to civil servants and contract staff alike, are in French and assume French qualifications or a French authorisation to practise.
  • AP-HP's international relations department (DRI) is responsible for receiving foreign specialist doctors. Its 2024 activity report says it hosted 45 doctors as associate trainees (stagiaires associés) for two six-month periods, 13 associate clinical research practitioners and 6 fellows. It also runs the 35 places for foreign residents of the Paris hospitals (REHP) with the AP-HP interns' office, filled by 39 people in 2024, and assigns 19 AP-HP-funded posts for practitioners from Southeast Asia. These are training and cooperation places, mostly tied to partner countries, not permanent jobs.
  • Non-EU doctors who want a permanent career in France normally pass the national EVC knowledge test run by the Centre national de gestion (CNG). Successful candidates choose an assigned post nationally and complete the competence consolidation period as praticien associé, which lasts two years for doctors. AP-HP hospitals are among the hospitals that receive these doctors, but the assignment is made through the CNG, not by applying to AP-HP.
  • For new staff, AP-HP offers induction pathways with 2,000 tutors and helps with housing: it says it allocates 1,200 homes a year to staff in Ile-de-France, runs 46 hospital nurseries and offers reduced-rent housing for jobs in short supply.

What you need before you can be hired

  • Doctors with a non-EU diploma: pass the EVC run by the CNG, complete the two-year consolidation period as praticien associé, then obtain authorisation to practise and register with the Ordre des médecins. Registration for the EVC is online, free and open only during the session window the CNG publishes each year.

  • French at B2. The CNG requires proof of French at B2 or above with your EVC registration, for example a TCF or TEF result or a DELF. Work at AP-HP is in French; English tests such as IELTS or OET are not accepted.

  • Nurses with a non-EU diploma cannot in principle practise in France with that diploma. Service-Public says you can apply for authorisation through the regional DREETS only in set cases, such as a diploma already recognised by an EU state with three years' full-time practice there; otherwise you take the French nursing diploma at a nursing school (IFSI), where the director can shorten the three-year course to two, and you need French at B2 to be admitted. Nurses then register with the Ordre national des infirmiers.

  • EU and EEA nurses and doctors with qualifications listed under Directive 2005/36/EC register with their professional order in France without the EVC.

  • Residence permit. Doctors, midwives, dentists and pharmacists on the authorisation route can hold the talent card for medical and pharmacy professions, which requires gross annual pay of at least €41,386.48 (step 2 of the praticien associé scale) according to Service-Public. Other staff usually need the salaried worker permit, which the employer applies for.

How to apply

  1. Check the route for your profession

Doctors with a non-EU diploma start with the CNG's EVC procedure. Nurses check the Service-Public page on nursing access to see whether they can apply for authorisation or must take the French diploma.
  2. Get French to B2

Book a TCF, TEF or DELF early. The CNG asks for B2 at EVC registration, and nursing schools ask for B2 at admission.
  3. Register for the EVC in the annual window

Register online when the CNG opens the session; documents must be in French or translated by an approved translator. If you pass, you choose an assigned post through the national procedure, which may be at AP-HP or elsewhere.
  4. Search AP-HP vacancies

Once you hold a French authorisation or diploma, search offers on recrutement.aphp.fr by job, hospital and contract type. AP-HP says a CV is enough to apply and it replies within 15 days.
  5. Go through AP-HP's five recruitment steps

AP-HP describes application, review, a first phone call, an on-site interview and an induction pathway, often with a tutor.
  6. Sort out your residence permit

Non-EU doctors on the authorisation route apply for the talent card for medical professions; other staff need a work authorisation requested by the employer before the visa.

Pay

AP-HP is a public hospital, so pay follows national public hospital scales, not hospital-specific rates. Hospital doctors are paid by step under ministerial orders; non-EU doctors on the consolidation period are paid on the praticien associé scale. Nurses and other paramedical staff are paid on the national hospital civil service grids; we could not confirm the current grid amounts from an official page, so we do not quote them. AP-HP's careers site also mentions extra pay for night work and full reimbursement of the Navigo transport pass as described by its staff.

Questions

AP-HP has no campaign for recruiting non-EU doctors directly. Its international relations department hosts foreign specialists as associate trainees and fellows, mostly through cooperation agreements. For a permanent career, non-EU doctors pass the national EVC and are assigned to a post, which may be at AP-HP.

Not in clinical roles. The CNG requires French at B2 for the EVC, nursing schools require B2 for admission, and AP-HP's services work in French.

Only after obtaining the right to practise in France. Service-Public says a non-EU nursing diploma does not in principle allow practice; you either qualify for authorisation in limited cases, such as recognition by an EU state plus three years' practice there, or take the French nursing diploma.

AP-HP has 38 hospitals, 100,000 staff and more than 8 million patients a year, according to its own figures updated in 2026.

Apply online at recrutement.aphp.fr. AP-HP says only a CV is required and it replies within 15 days, followed by a phone call and an on-site interview.

Yes. AP-HP says it allocates 1,200 homes a year to staff in Ile-de-France and offers reduced-rent housing for jobs in short supply.

Service-Public gives €41,386.48 gross a year as step 2 of the praticien associé scale, the minimum pay for the talent card for medical professions.

Yes. AP-HP's 2025 summary lists 760 midwives and 54,000 paramedical and socio-educational staff. With a diploma from outside the EU you first need the right to practise in France: midwives and pharmacists, like doctors, usually go through the national EVC procedure run by the CNG, and paramedical professions need an authorisation to practise or the French diploma.
